Title: Wells Gardner 50/60hz dial??
Post by: lettuce on August 14, 2005, 03:31:55 pm
What should the dial at the rear of my WG monitor ideally be set to? As for some games i have to keep tuning this dial so the screen looks correct, on some games i get the sqwished effect at the top and bottom of the screen, is it ok to have the 50/60hz dial set half way between the 2?

Commercial arcade monitors were never designed to keep switching between several games/resolutions all the time. They were made for one game and you adjusted the monitor for that one game.

The 50/60 pot was included in the design to help in countries where 50 Hertz power was used. This pot helps in the fine tuning of the vertical size to display the very top (or bottom) edge of the graphics. Sometimes it eliminates "foldover".

Thanks for the reply, yeah i have to change the 50/60hz pot for vertical games mostly to remove the foldover effect, but then when i play a horizontal the screen is quite small with big boards top and bottom, so then i have to change it back again. Just woundering if forcing a refresh rate within mate would eliminate having to change the 50/60hz pot??

You must be using it for MAME?  You're going to have to settle on a frequency for the monitor and adjust the games in software, if that is the case.

Yeah im using mame, im guessing games would look better in 50hz with the picture set to fit the screen. So i would just have to change the res of the games via mame so i dont get the foldover effect right?? Ken if your about could you explain why this foldover effect happens, why doesnt it just cut the top and bottom of the screen off??

It's because the video signal is out of sync with the physical operation of the monitor.  The electrons are being shot at the screen at a different rate than the game expects, so each drawing of the screen is either in front of the video signal or behind it.

So could i keep the res of the games (sorted in the ini folder of mame) that the ArcadeVGA res tool created the same, and just changed the refresh rate of the said game via mame? Would this stop the foldover??

There are probably a couple of different ways it could be done via software, but yes, you have the idea.
