Std Button diameter is 1 1/8"

yeah, or you could try "wiggling" it, or using a sanding attachemnt on a dremel

it depends on what kind of buttons you have.  Happ buttons require a 1-1/8" hole.  Other brands are different.

I used a one inch hole saw on a panel once. I was able to widen the holes with a semi-round file in a few minutes. Easier to buy the right hole saw though.

They also make the 1 1/8" spade bits.  Check your home depot.

Get the right tool for the right job. In this case it's a hole saw or a spade bit.  The hole saw bit could set you back 15 bucks if you hit home depot or lowes.  I just picked up a ful set from 1/2" -5 " for 20 bucks off ebay.  If you are impulsive, go to sears:

1 1/8" spade bit is under 5 bucks ($3.99).
