Title: bye bye red lights
Post by: mmmPeanutButter on August 12, 2005, 09:15:20 am
I read this article (http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,68507,00.html?tw=rss.TOP) on wired news about a transmitter that turns (some) red lights green.

There is an article on how to build one (http://www.i-hacked.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=176) also.

Sounds pretty neat.

Just wondering if anybody has made one "for testing purposes?"

Haven't read the article, but I assume this is the device that emergency vehicles use when en route to an actual emargency. I can't imagine that the police or the judge would have any sense of humor about you trying to BYO in this case.

Before any Italians think about building this, don't bother. I heard traffic lights there aren't taken seriously.  ;D

Well, yeah, since the article says it is now a federal offense :)

I know some motorcyclists who used something like this.  Because the sensors in the roads don;t always pick up motorcycles.  But there are better things for motorcyclists like a magnetic field generator so the sensors will pick you up.

In TN and MN a motorcycle can turn left on a red light if he/she has been waiting an inappropiate ammount of time.  I've done that in MN :)  Happens alot at night when the lights switch to detect mode rather than timed mode.  If the sensors don't detect you the lights aren't going to change.

Red lights are almost non-existant in Belgium. Traffic flow is controlled by a series of roundabouts taken at high speed while dodging little old ladies on bicycles.
