I've seen guys hacking a raider pro joystick to get the translucent blue handled trigger joystick but has any one hacked the circuit board part to use it as an interface? Is it a good joystick to hack for the interface? I'm building a 1 player cab and want to try a joystick interface hack. I want the handle anyway for another control panel on my other cab that has swappable panels.
Does any1 know off hand how many inputs a raider pro would give me?
I'm thinking 4 buttons, 1 joystick, coins, starts, esc and enter and maybe tab. So I would need 14-15 inputs. I was leaning towards a sidewinder but would go raider pro to get the handle.

6 fire buttons. There is an auto fire switch(on/off.) There is also a trim switch for the analog joystick.

The Raider Pro has only 4 fire buttons. 2 of the fire switches are redundant. so that you can use either the right or left hand on them.
Basically it uses a standard game port interface. X and Y axis of Joystick1 plus buttons 1 and 2 for both players = 4 buttons.
I don't think it would be a good hack if you are looking for a lot of inputs. It's nice for a trigger stick and some here have been very sucessful in hacking them onto Super bases.
I really want an analog stick on a "future" CP, but I'm not sure how sturdy the base unit would mount or how it would work mounting it to a wooden CP. So for now I'm using it as a regular PC joystick until I figure out what I'm going to do.

I looked over those raider sticks... and I wasnt impressed. I guess for 10$, you cant go wrong... but... i didnt like the buttons feel, nor the switches that were used.
Id rather buy an 80$ stick off ebay... or, use another stick that has a better feel to it. Looks are secondary to me.
As for mounting an analog joy... it depends on the model. Ive tried one - but it wasnt very sturdy. However the thrustmaster fox pro 2, was both sturdy and a fairly easy hack.

I looked at them today and realeased that they are analog. Imagaine me smacking my head now... I want to hack it to install a t-stick so it isn't going to work for an interface. Eventually I might hack the handle.
I also looked at sidewinders and they were $20. I thought its been talked about here that you could get them for $10 or even find them for $5 sometimes.

sidewinder has a lot of varieties....
the usb ones are expensive...

At $3 bucks each I ordered 3, the shipping is almost as much as 3 pads. I don't mind spending $15 from a place like that but I'd be hesitant to buy a big ticket item from them.
-
well... around $5 each included S&H is not a bad price....
heee hee....
but yeah.... if I do buy expensive items... usually... I'll mostly stay in big stores....

I don't mind ordering from big or well established web sites. On big tickets items shipping is almost always less than sales tax and the price is still significantly lower on most things even with the shipping cost. Than of course theres things like arcade controls that the internet is about the only way to get them.

If you're looking for a trigger style, check out the Xenophobe joystick -- 3 buttons, and uses leaf switches.
I found the idea at Mr. Salty's pages: http://www.mrsalty.net/arcade/controls/controls2.shtml (http://www.mrsalty.net/arcade/controls/controls2.shtml)
I just picked one up on ebay and there are a couple left for $30:

pricey? A little, but I love gorf, tron and several others this will be great for...
