I just don't have what it takes to config Mamewah. I have read all the readme files and several tutorials, but I just can't understand how all this works. I tried to config the .ini file and eventually got it to where it wouldn't run at all. :-\ It's hopeless.
I want it to run Mame, atari, nes, snes, and genesis. I dunno what to do. Are there any pre-made mamewah files out there that are already set up for this kind of thing? I won't be able to config this on my own...
-
You can either go and download JCrouse's .ini files from his website, which also contains other useful files, or you can use Screaming's MAMEWAH Config program, which downloads JCrouse's and others templates, along with backgrounds, from the internet.

Yah i have the same problem, its not easy to setup I have done several others ultrastyle, AtomicFe, those are a snap but mamewah is not easy & its too bad, i like the looks of it, I did see a note tho a new setup is coming out very soon thats easier to setup so im waiting on that version
thanks

Mamewah isn't too hard. That was the first thing I did from scratch. If you can setup the other front ends, you can definitely do this. Promise. :) Someone please post the tutorial, I can't find it anywhere. Once you get the basics, its cake. CPViewer website is a great help. I would start with the NES emulator or one of the consoles, then move onto mame.
-
There is a setup wizard that kevin has in his links on his website but the setup wizard does not support the newer versions of mamewah if I could get a good tutorial that would be great, i like ultrastyle but if you want a game in the m's it takes forever to get the wheel there
thanks

I felt the same way when I first tried it. I set up the directories and everything fine, that made sense to me. I ran into the problems when it came to auditing the ROM's. Coming from the universal Windows layout of MAME32, I was looking for something like "audit" not Generate List or whatever the menu item was to audit the ROM's. Just not intuitive for me.
The documentation I found online was as confusing to me as the MAMEWAH menu's. I got it working, but still haven't fully customized it with backgrounds or set it up to launch all my emulators. Once I got MAME up and running on the cab, everything else just kind of lost priority! ;D

And Part 2:
3. TO GENERATE LISTS OF GAMES
We already have formed all the necessary one to be able to begin to enjoy our games. Now single it is to generate the list of our games and to throw one partidilla to our favourite game.
We sent to MAMEWAH double property click in MAMEWAH.exe and pressed key 2 (or the key that we have formed so that are the menus).
In the menu that sample we chose the option "Select Emulator" (we pressed 1 to accept or the key formed for such aim) and chose the emulator of which we want to generate the list of games.
We pressed 2 so that it appears the menu (or the key formed for such aim) and we selected "Game List Options", and in the menu that unfolds we chose the option "Generate Games List"
After seconds of delay already we have the list of games generated for the emulator. We generated lists of games for each one of the emulators that we have.
Once generated the lists of games, we go to the main screen of the MAMEWAH and selected the emulator that we want. Will be the list of games available for that emulator. Now we chose game, we pressed key 1 (or the one that we have defined action to accept

Thats not bad at all NinjaEpisode. Close enough to read and translate make the changes to get it into proper English (anyone have time to do that? I have a 10 month old kid hangin' off me! ;D ).
Looks like one of the more comprehensive guides, and I like the way it's laid out.
-
Try GameEx. I use it and really like it. It is very easy to configure and does as much if not more than Mamewah.

I'm playing with MaLa right now. Way easier then mamewah
-
OK, I took the english automated conversion, put it in Word, cleaned it up a lot, and added the graphics...(about half thru some of the wordsmithing...)
-
Maybe just copy it from Word and paste it into a post. If it's good, maybe one of the mods will sticky it. Anyone who wants a hard copy can just copy and paste it back into whatever they use and print it.
Thanks for doing this!

There's no way I can config mamewah
Just cut your losses, forget you ever heard the word "emulation" and most of all get rid of that computer right now. Seriously!

Couldn't of said it better myself, glad someone did.

OK, here is the 1st half or so...cant post it all, since it is over 512kb. Made it a PDF, so I could post it...lost its links though... >:(
I will work on it more on Monday...since I wish I had this when I was first setting it up. It's pretty good!

You mean the *beta* versions?

And what the *heck* is with that Mamewah website? I wonder if it is possible to make a site that is more difficult to read. Plain black text on a white background would be infinitely better.
I'm new to this and I am having a hella time setting up Mamewah as well. I find it quite poor that probably the most important piece of information about Mamewah is not to be found anywhere on the website or in the documentation (as far as I can tell). And that is that Mamewah ONLY works with MAME for DOS.
Is this or is this not true? I've read this on a number of websites but have yet to see it mentioned in the official docs. MAME for windows doesn't respond at all for me. But MAME for DOS works. And by "works" I mean at least the game list will refresh. Launching a game that doesn't hang my PC has yet to be achieved.
-
Uh... no. MameWah works for any version of MAME or any other program that can be launched from a commandline.

Well I know my web design isn't up to much, but are your eyes OK? It couldn't be easier to read if you ask me.

As Ace said, any commandline emulator should work. Actually the defaults are for Windows MAME.

You're not using MAME32 are you? Make sure you're using Windows commandline MAME, and your commandline_format looks something like '[name]{autodosbox}{nosafelaunch}'.
If that doesn't work (it should), change {autodosbox} for {dosbox} (then {nodosbox} if that works), and/or change {nosafelaunch} to {safelaunch}.

Just like someone else mentioned earlier in the thread, I'd suggest trying Mamewah Config 1.61.1 if you are having trouble.
It will help you set things up and make it simple.
It is discussed here:

this is the bad thing about mamewah its a shame, its a great front end, but its crazy that the setup is so difficult, i have done atomicfe & ultrastyle(those two are a snap) but i just gave up on mamewah, if somehow the setup could be done a little better ,for example ultrastyle has a setup wizard that holds your hand all the way thru, if mamewah had this type of setup it would rule above all others
thanks

There are several problems almost all FE writers have which explain why the documentation can be bad/incomplete:
1) We don't have a lot of time (& what we have is spent programming, or other things),
2) We are always changing things so writing docs is almost a waste of time as it quickly becomes outdated,
3) Things are often hard to put into easy to understand words (at least for me),
4) We don't get paid,
5) We hate writing documentation ;D
I said 'we'...not wanting to tarnish anyone with the same brush as me but that is the way I see it.
With the help of one or two others I hope to get some better docs together at some point after my next proper release...
-
I saw that "divemaster" mentioned ultrastyle had a setup wizard that holds your hand through the whole process...I'll go out on a limb here to say that I believe thats what we are all looking for from the mamewah program. Credit has definitely been given to minwah for the mamewah program, and rightly so, but maybe someone else out there in the gaming community might be able to pick up the ball on this one and put together a tutorial or setup wizard that even a newbie could use. Remember, we all aren't programmers or computer whiz's, but we are definitely gamers. Don't let us miss out on this great FE!
-
I believe this is what Screaming did with his MameWAH Config program. Maybe he will update it when MameWAH comes out of beta again.

Yep, I haven't used it much but Screaming seems to have done a great job :)
-
MameWah is the easiest frontend to configure.[I belive]
Because I don't have spare time to Try any more frontend.
Jcource and screaming made it more easy.
If some One is saying Mamewah is Difficult then he should use Mame32.
;)

To all you people that are complaing about how hard MAMEWAH is to set up, have you actually tried using the (unofficial, granted) setup program for it?

Steve,
I get a blank page when I click on your link.
John

Interesting; It works for me! What about the direct link to the download?

Yep. That worked. Also, while surfing your page I get a lot of screen flashing and then when all the images load (I'm on broadbanc - 6 meg cable) many of your screens appear blank. It's pretty weird. I've never seen anything like it before.
John
-
Hmm. It validates (http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bluecamel.org%2F) and works for me in IE and FF.
I'll look into it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I gotta say that although I had a little trouble with mamewah for an hour or so I really can't see why anyone should find it so hard.
The only time I had trouble was when I was trying to set up my controls on it and that only took an hour or two fiddling round.
(I am not a programmer or even close to it)
Granted the docs are not great but they point you in the right direction.
I've tried atomic fe and I felt it was very poor compared to mamewah, it was too slow, difficult to set up a filtered list and just did'nt feel as intuative as mamewah.
I've been looking for a frontend with the looks of atomicfe but with the usability of mamewah but I keep coming back to mamewah as I've yet to find anything better than it.

Hi,
I know how these people feel........ i had loadsa trouble configuring mamewah..... THEN i decided to read, re-read the tutorials..... search this forum for similar problems...... and also google searched my problems..... another quick read at the mamewah docs.... THEN IT WORKED... cant believe how much i thought it was hard.
If anyone is still having trouble..... i suggest like me, they were to unwilling to read up about it properly... including the docs supplied by minwah. Im still havin trouble with a couple of emulators..... but so far i have my main 3 working and getting there!!
:)

ok- I used the configuration tool. Got it to load all 5,000+ games. COOL! I then go to boot up mamewah.exe, and it shows NO GAMES. I dont get it. Is there a different startup icon to use once I configure it?
Thanks

Check what list you're using-sometimes, it boots to an empt one instead of the master list. In this case, tell it to "create a filtered list" but with no filter on teh list itself. The result is a duplicate of the master list.
-
how/where exactly do I do that?
I went into MameWah Config to find it- found where the list is- chose the non-default option (something like mameanalogXP.exe {-list} or something like that) it did a reload cycle, I hit save. Opened MameWah.exe- nothing. Suggestions?
-
nevermind- got it working somehow! WOOHOO!!

What I don't get is why people who complain that it's so damn hard to figure out CONTINUE TO TRY TO GET IT TO WORK!
Is there something hard-coded in yer brains that tell you "I must keep doing this, even though I can't stop saying how bad it sucks"?
Seriously, go look at another front end and use something else instead of "wasting your time" trying to figure out the Rubik's dodecahedron you guys think Mamewah is.
I've got an idea. Try Howard C's front end. See where complaining about how hard it is gets you with HIM! :laugh2:
