From your link above:

"Survival in New York City is a marginally above-average interactive fiction title..."

...

"Survival in New York City is definitely not one of the best interactive fiction works you will play..."

Sounds like FUN!  /snark

Hey now, it is a fun game!

That is just one person's opinion!

Downloaded. I used to really love games like this. I'll give it a whirl after a bit.

I know, I was just yankin' your chain. I can't get into the text adventures like I used too. I had barely played them back in the day anyhow, then Ultima came out and they completely lost their appeal.

I'm sort of in awe of people that can still play them. What, with Half-life 2 and Doom 3 out on the shelves.  :)

Well you just have to see them as a diiferent kind of entertainment. As much as I enjoy movies, it has never diminished my love for a good novel. This is very much the same kind of thing.

I hate text adventures.

Not because I hate the idea, just the lack of commands:

:View bottle

I don't understand "view"

:Look at bottle

I don't understand "look"

:Examine bottle

I don't understand "examine"

:Take bottle

What bottle?

:Take bottle from bum

What?

:You know, the bottle that damned bum is holding. Obviously it's important to this game, or it wouldn't be in the description.

What?

:Screw off

I don't understand "screw"

Ok, so it isn't the best adventure game ever. In fact, it kinda pisses me right off.

I'm so close. Sooo close.

Don't let these crazies diminish your love for a game.

They really suck though.

Heh, my sister once spent three months stuck at the same spot in a text adventure based on The Hobbit, because whoever wrote it mis-typed a single letter.

... a text adventure based on The Hobbit...

I have that one still in the box with instructions for the Apple ][.

I have a feeling that this game will ensure that I don't further my progress on my cab this evening.

Best text adventure ever:

:Lie down in mud

-- You lie down in the mud.. blah blah... Mr. Prosser... Blah blah... Bulldozer... Blah blah, you should get up.

:Wait

-- Bulldozer gets closer. Mr Prosser is yelling and motioning for you to move but you can't hear him over the sounds of the dozer, blah blah.....

:Wait

etc etc. :)  I was going to say "Obscure Reference", but I have a feeling that would only apply if you were all jocks.   ;)

FYI, there's a flash version of the old HHG text game out there somewhere. I expect google would turn it up if you're interested. And I agree, best text adventure of all time.

If you head over to http://infocom.elsewhere.org, they have all of infocom's games available to play, online through telnet.  It'll even let you save your game if you want.

Has anyone made it anywhere yet? It's not that difficult!

Haven't really had any time to dedicate to it yet. When I start one I get pretty absorbed. It's patiently waiting on my desktop.
