Well last night I was setting up categories in GameLauncher. I tried out one of my all-time favorite games, "Super Dodge Ball" (the original 80's game, not the Neo Geo version).
Well, to my horror, the game only supports 2 buttons, THROW and PASS. Where is the JUMP?!!?!?!
I'm using MAME 0.78. Some please tell me they fixed this in a later version?
I'm also desperately looking for a newer version of DOS mame, but the newest I could find was .78
-
CP says to press both buttons to jump. Did you try that?
Mame.net has DOS version 92, not sure if others were released yet.
-
You have to press both buttons to jump as mentioned.
Must not have been your ALL TIME fav game ;)
-
Jumpin Jesus on a pogo stick that's embarassing! ::) I could have sworn it was a third button... Doesn't sound intuitive to use the two together... or does it?!

Where? I go to the "older versions" page and it stops at .69
Found them here:

it was designed to go on the NES too...

Nope, doesn't really sound intuitive at all... I totally agree on that one. I only remember cuz the local arcade near me had one for quite a while.
-
Depends how you are defining intuitive?
In MAME No, on the real thing Yes.
-
Could you map a third button to be jump if you felt it would respond better ? If so, tell me how do I set it in the "Input This Game" option menu.
Thanks

Yeah.
Lets map P1 Button 1 and Button 2 to the same key.
Like button 1 could be ctrl AND r
Button 2 could be alt AND r
Then have an arcade button push r.
-
I am confused now....... not sure how pressing button3 which is only mapped to "r" would simulate pressing button1 and button2 together.
I would assume mapping would be something like this:
P1 button1 = Ctrl
P1 button2 = Alt
P1 button3 = Ctrl AND Alt
Please explain what you meant in your description....
-
I assume because in the game, there is no button 3. How can you directly map it to have an in-game function?
You have to tell buttons one and two to both fire off the same control in addition to their independent controls. This way, when you hit "r" (button 3), both 1 and 2 will fire.
Edit: Logically speaking, I would think it'd be an OR instead of an AND on those controls, though.
-
Exactly ..... an OR would make much more sense....
BTW: I disliked how a player is suppose to "jump" in Kangaroo so I mapped button2 to be the "UP ARROW" and it works fine. Does this mean Mame allows you to assign extra buttons to games which did not originally have extra buttons (ie: Kangaroo seems like it only ever had one button to "punch", but it let me add a second button to "jump")

I am running Mame V.81 and Super Dodgeball does not load unfortunately.
I really liked playing dodgeball as a kid. How is the game play in this arcade game ... is it entertaining?

Yeah, the arcade only had two buttons, and you pressed them both together to jump. That was one of my favorite games in the arcade when I was a kid and I could play it for a long time; cycling through all the screens several times.
There was an annoying bug when I first tried it in MAME (back around MAME .61) but it has since been fixed, thankfully. The throw/catch button was stuck in some sort of "autofire" mode and so if you held the button down to catch a ball thrown at you, after catching the ball it would immediately throw it without giving you time to decide what you want to do with it. Of course, this wasn't correct. In the arcade, you had to release the button and press it again to throw. It was fixed some time around MAME .74 or so I believe.

Can someone please verify whether Super Dodge Ball (spdodgeb.zip) should be working in V81 for me?
Also, there is another (clone? of) Super Dodge Ball which is named "sdodgeb.zip" but I can not find the actual game name to activate it within Mame32 GUI. There is only one game called "Super Dodge Ball" in the game list. I looked in the "Not Working" and "Clone" lists as well, but can not find the title. Which ZIP file are you getting your Super Dodge Ball to work?
-
btw, it didn't sound like how you setup a 3rd button for both was properly answered above.
Assuming button 1 = Z, button 2 is X and button 3 is C (look at keyboard for why)
in mame key config...
moved to player 1 button 1
select
press Z
select
press C
Now button 1 will say Z or C
then move to player 1 button 2
select
press X
select
press C
Now button 2 will say X or C
Now if you press C it will press both button 1 and button 2.
Press Z and only button1
Press X and only button2
I do this for a few games on my ngage since the controls are already an issue and it can be hard to hit 1 and 2 at exactly the same time on those small buttons

UNCLET:
The other Dodge Ball file is a Neo Geo game. You need to have the Neo Geo BIOS roms to use it.
MadHat:
What problems are you having? Does it even run? (It should still run and show a menu even if it's all misconfigured)
What I did was first make sure all paths in the CFG file are set up. I did it the easy way and included the full path names (ie: "c:\arcade\mame\roms\" )
Next thing is to use the GameLauncherTool to create a proper list of your roms...
-
I have the NeoGeo bios file. What is the name of the game in the game list so I can find it and double-click it to play? Currently only "Super Dodge Ball" comes up ..... there are not two game listings starting with "Super ...." related to Dodge Ball.
-
Oh, MAME32 considers it a non-working game because the ROM is incomplete. You will not see it through the "AVAILABLE" menu, but you can still start it up through the "ALL GAMES" menu (it's labelled "Super Dodge Ball / Kunio [somethingsomething]"

Do a mame -listfull > output.txt
Then open that output.txt file in notepad and search for hte rom name, you will now know the game name.

thanks for information I will try that
