I am considering the same thing, a metal cp, for my new upright I'm getting ready to build. I want a readuis on the fron edge and it's hard to do with wood. I will probably make them myself. I made all three for my cocktail. There are pics at http://home.comcast.net/~cpviewer. The thing I am worried about is the graphics an whether to put lexan on top or not. I am also wondering about mounting of the tackball. It's pretty easy in a wooden cp.

I was just thinking about that yesterday, I thought that it would be cool to make a CP out of that polished diamond-plate aluminum.  That stuff is expensive, though, so I probably won't use it on a full-size cabinet.  Maybe on a small single-player bartop, though.

I would thing it would be very tough resting your hands on diamond plate. Also you would have an issue with the controls sitting flush. You would need to spot-face the top of the CP to flush mount the controls.

The polished aluminum diamond plate is actually pretty smooth on the hands as opposed to steel, and yes, the areas around the buttons would have to be faced in order to get them to sit flush.  A flat spade bit in a drill press would take care of that, though.
