Well, I expected some comment on this before now. Maybe I'm the only one here who sat through this stinker and gets the reference.
Top notch looking work on your part, though!  ;)

It was from an early 80's movie called Nightmares. It was a movie compilation of half hour "short stories". The Bishop Of Battle was the final story, involving a man obsessed with an arcade game.
He sneaks into the arcade when it is closed, and acheives the goal, at which point the game becomes a little bit too real.  ;)

Wasn't the actor in that story Emilio Estevez (sp)?  Kind of ties in to Maximum Overdrive, which he also starred in - that movie has a guy getting fried by the games in the truck stop arcade.

I haven't seen the movie, but you might be right. (http://movies.yahoo.com/mvc/dfrv?mid=1800101052&s=&rvid=255-118438&i=0&spl=&ys=VOLpdbnmiSBy1AJv153xuQ--

The Bishop of Battle

This movie is a collection of about 4 or 5 short stories. All of which are really not that good except for one "The Bishop of Battle". The story is about a kid (emilio Estevez) who is a master of a hard to beat arcade game. Only a few people are rumored to have made it to the last level and he is determined to find out what the bishop of battle has in store for him. This is a great short story and worth the trouble to find the movie. Its kind of like an episode of the 80's twilight zone.

it wasn't that bad, ok maybe it was, but I did watch it at 2 am on the Sci-Fi channel.  I'm impressed you guys are putting this thing together!  If you want a suggestion on the AI, lookup A* Pathfinding, i've been doing a lot of research on it for my own game ideas and this is a really efficient way of setting up the AI.
  - anyways, freakin cool you guys are working on this, good luck!

Thanks man- I had not gotten to the actual programming as I still have Starfighter to complete- Just wanted to get a working demo intro for model test and scale- I will definitely check out the path finding AI-

The film overall was a bit of a stinker- I hated the other segments in the film but I loved the Bishop of Battle- I envision a game that switches game play slowly from 3rd to 1st person (as in the flick) then changes to immersive on level 13 (haven't done the models for that yet)- Will hopefully add remote surround sound and lighting effects to the level 13 transition- Still having trouble getting a bead on the voice track from the flick- I know these things are archived somewhere-

Bishop of Battle is the only one I ever remember from Nightmares. The rest of it...meh. Must not've been worth the brain space.

I've always loved the segment, though.

I loved the Bishop section of that movie, the other segments are hard to sit through.

I always found the opening funny, does anyone else notice the other patrons in the arcade seem very focused on the attract screens until the main character walked in?  :D

I could be wrong, but it might have something to do with the fact the original post is from 2005.

I loved this movie as a kid. A few months ago my wife and I caught this on late night TV. It brought back a lot of memories. I always remembered the "Bishop", but I also remember the girl going out to get cigarettes.
