I know what you're all thinking, they do it auto on startup.. well, as I've stated before, the previous owner of my cabinet was a complete pratt (see Project forum thing for details on my cab) and he's actually CUT the degaussing coil wires off, so its not connected to anything at all.. the degaussing connector is left alone, luckily my monitor supports manual degaussing via a button on the inside panel so i'l wire that up when the monitor goes back in.. but this machine has been in a warehouse for about 5 years i would say, maybe even more having not-been degaussed, and has been moved at least a good 30 miles, probably more (dont know where it originally came from) is it safe to leave it un-degaussed for that matter of time? or are the effects just a bad picture? It actually didnt look bad (when it was working)
EDIT: Just occured to me, with the degaussing coil wires cut it wouldnt actually degauss with the button either... okay, suggestions?

I have about the same problem. My degaussing coil was not hooked up when I bought my cabinet. Upon reconnecting the degaussing coil I blew a fuse on the board. So I disconnected it and purchased an external D-coil off of eBay. I'm using that until I figure out what the problem is with the internal D-coil. As far as I know you should be fine for the time being. Your colors will just be screwed up until you deguass it. -Jarrett

You don't need it. It's not going to hurt anything having it disconnected. You may just have to degauss it manually from time to time. Sometimes the degaussing coil will short. When this happens I cut the plug, like a lot of people do. This prevents some unknowing tech from plugging it in and blowing the fuse.

I need to get mine re-connected, the previous owner of my machine wasnt a technician.. he just went around cutting wires needlessly -.- (I know this from pretty much every other wire in the machine)

It's easy enough to test. Put a meter lead on each end of the wire with the meter on ohms. If you have resistance it should be OK. If it's a dead short.... well then it's obviously shorted, and should be left disconnected.

ADD: I got about 30 ohms resistance, that sound right?

30 sounds a bit high, I usually get between 8 & 15. However, I have no idea what monitor you have so I couldn't say for sure. If you post the make and model someone will be able to help I'm sure. My feeling is as long as you don't have a dead short you should be fine. 30 ohms could be perfectly normal for your monitor, and probably is.

'tis a Hantarex MTC 9000, and it seemed to go between 28 and 30 (difficult to get the DMM in position - was a bit fiddley)

BUMP - can anyone confirm that this coil is okay to plug back in (and if it matters which wire for the coil goes to which on the connector ... ?)

It doesn't matter which way you hook it up... it's AC. If I had an MTC 9000 handy I'd let you know.... I still think it's fine.

i have a MTC9000 and it doesnt degauss on startup any suggestions on what i need to check for?
is there a fuse? are there related components that could have failed?
