I'm considering purchasing a 2ghz Athlon XP with a new motherboard. The board I want says that it takes 400ddr, but will it also take my old high density sdr for now? (so I don't have to buy all new memory at the same time).
Will this slow my machine down to the point where I shouldn't consider it

depends on the motherboard, what brand/model is it? some of the DDR boards do also have SDR slots.
but...i don't think the new KT400 boards or the nforce2 boards have those extra slots, which means that yes, you would need to buy some DDR ram.
what board are you getting?

Theres a few that seem pretty cheap but with everything I need. I'm on a tight budget (especially now that I need new memorty). I wanted agp 8x since I'm getting a ati 9500pro at the same time.
but time to go price memory I guess

One thing I've noticed with memory is you definately get what you pay for. The cheap generic/house brand memory has given me nothing but grief in the past. You might notice a lot of problems with rebooting or no POST, degraded system performace, and even OS corruption using the cheap stuff. Now I use strictly Mushkin, Corsair, or Micron memory. Usually it's a few more bucks but will save you pain, suffering, and an RMA or 2 in the long run.
In the end though if all you can afford is the generic then go for it. If it makes the difference of getting your cab up and running, it might be worth the possible trouble to you. YMMV though ;)

check out newegg for a mobo, they have a good serach engine, plus they are great retailers (if you live in the US):

also, you're really gonna want DDR for a system that fast with such a fast vid card. SDR would be a huge bottleneck on performance.
