Title: How to change res to 640x288 ?
Post by: Stobe on July 31, 2005, 02:53:29 pm
I've got an arcade monitor hooked up to an ArcadeVGA card.  When I go into the setting of my display, the lowest resolution it allows me to pick is 640x480.  Will windows let you chose 640x288?  or is that something that I'll have to rely on MameWAH of doing only within the FE?

Thanks,
Stobe

Yes, go into Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Adaptor > List All Modes and then the mode you want.

I think there is a program called 'Quickres', downloadable from Ultimarc which makes this a tad simpler.

There is an icon which gets installed on the taskbar when you install the ArcadeVGA drivers. Click on this and you can change to any of the ArcadeVGA resolutions.
If this icon is not there, it means the drivers were not installed.

Also,

I believe Quickres is part of Windows by default, but doesn't normally load at startup.

PowerStrip is legally only free for a thirty-day trial (although I think older versions were free and still around.)

Another option is Multires by the same people who make PowerStrip.  http://www.entechtaiwan.net/util/multires.shtm  It should work with any resolution supported by the driver, is freeware, and allows allows you to change resolution from the command line in scripts or batch files.

I've got the icon for Quickres in my tray, but of the 20-30 choices, 640x288 is not one of them.

Also, no matter which one I pick, I get a "Mode Change Failed" error.

Could this be because I have 2 video cards installed?  (The other was the PCI NVidia 4000 I used to get the drivers loaded in the AVGA card).

Thanks.

Actually, I saw on Multires' site that Quickres was the 16-bit app that originally shipped with Win95.  That is more likely to be the problem.  I dumped Quickres for Multires long ago.

Auto pan only works in Windows 2000 and XP, and only when you select 1024 x 768 resolution.

You can't have two video cards installed.

Read my topic in the Monotor section and you will see why I needed the second video card.

If the colors are messed up, then it's more than likely that your monitor is messed up.  If one of the color guns is not working properly, that could explain the unreadable text at certain resolutions.

In fact, even with the AVGA drivers installed correctly now, my machine will not boot without that second card.

You must have your computer configured incorrectly in some way.  Go into the BIOS and make sure that it is set to boot with the AGP as the primary video controller.  Is there anything in the first PCI slot?  This will cause IRQ sharing problems with the AGP slot on most computers.

If it's not a hardware issue, then it has to be a windows driver issue.
