Title: 1UP's Pac-Mamea plans now online!
Post by: 1UP on December 27, 2002, 08:30:13 pm
For those who wanted to get the plans for my cab, you can now get them here - http://www.1uparcade.com/arcade-const-plans.html (http://www.1uparcade.com/arcade-const-plans.html)  or browse my site www.1uparcade.com (http://www.1uparcade.com)  Note: These zipped files cost me bandwidth, so please only download if you are planning to use them!

Also, those of you who wanted to see more pics of the insides, Santa left me a VERY nice digital cam this year, so pics are on their way!  :)

Yeah! What kinda camera did Santa bring? (and how can he and those elves make them out of wood... hmmm...)

Oh Yeah....now you put the plans up  ;)

There's a few trees out there that wish they were up a few weeks ago before I tried to re-invent the wheel  :P

Seriously though, thanks, I'll compare them to mine.

Still a great design brother!

Sony Cybershot DSC-S85 with 4.1 Megapixels and Zeiss lens!  The resolution is basically better what you would use for digital movie effects, so it's comparable to true 35mm quality.  But I stick to 1 megapixel pics mostly, they're more than enough for most things.  The focus, aperture and shutter are all manually controllable, so it's almost as good in every way as my old EOS  Rebel SLR 35mm.  MPEG movie mode, audio recording, way more features than I'll ever use...  ;D

Sorry about those trees Taz...  ;)

I'm still in the pre-planning stages of AP3, so I might have to think about the old rotating control panel idea.  Thanks for the upload, 1UP!

I have added some new photos to the Rotating Control Panels (http://www.1uparcade.com/arcade-const-panels.html) page, showing the way that the wiring is routed out thru the CP hub.  Also shows a CP "kickstand" I devised, to hold the hinged panel open for hands-free maintenance.  And a new shot of my Tron control panel on the Lighting (http://www.1uparcade.com/arcade-const-lighting.html) page.  Enjoy!

Can you point us into the direction of where to find some of the game art that you modified?  I am having a hard time finding good resolution pics for the cab I'm making.

Thank you.

I have looked at your web site numerous times, 1UP, and every time I do, I say, "Wow."

That is without a doubt the most impressive cab that I've ever seen.

Clearly the best cab I've seen to date

I have started cutting some smaller pieces of wood... but now with you plans available.... I'm VERY tempted to try..... the thing is... if I do it... I'll laminate my cab.... no more wood patterns....

and I'm still thinking if it is overkill to do rotating panel....
and if I can handle a project that requires soooo much skill....

but dammmm.... it looks SOOOOO NICE !!!!!
(that's if I can make it look nice....)

damm..... this is tough decision.... >:( >:( >:(

Well, that's up to you...  Certain people around here think my design is a bit obfuscated (unnecessarily complex, there's your $10 word for the day) but I really don't think it's much more work than making 3 removable control panels, and a lot of folks are doing that.  Most of the work went into the design, and that's already done for you!  ;)  TazMan (who posted above) is doing his own rotating panel cabinet, so you wouldn't be the first to follow in my footsteps...

obfuscated

Obfuscate \Ob*fus"cate\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. Obfuscated; p. pr. & vb. n. Obfuscating.] To darken; to obscure; to becloud; hence, to confuse; to bewilder.

That is quite a word.  Although, I wouldn't say it is the first word that comes to mind when seeing 1UP's Cab - that is I didn't find it confusing.

Not as obscure as obfuscated; but, I would say Inspirational or just basically F'n Cool!  8)

I LOVE your cabinet, but be careful with your $10 words:

obfuscated

Obfuscate \Ob*fus"cate\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. Obfuscated; p. pr. & vb. n. Obfuscating.] To darken; to obscure; to becloud; hence, to confuse; to bewilder.

His head, like a smokejack, the funnel unswept, and the ideas whirling round and round about in it, all obfuscated and darkened over with fuliginous matter. --Sterne.

Clouds of passion which might obfuscate the intellects of meaner females. --Sir. W. Scott.

well..... yeah... I understand....

I would love to have a rotating panel cab also....

and I know the plan is right there...

just I need to make myself believe that I have the skill to cut/drill everything according to plan....

you know.... for a simgle panel cab.. if things are a little off... its still ok.... I can live with a little gap........ and the thing probably won't be shaking.... but with things rotating... and if I'm not perfect in cutting.... panel part might start shaking.... (which will be a BAD thing....)

anyway.... once I made up my mind.....
I think I will use some of your bandwidth to confirm my thoughts.....

and a BIG THANKS for posting all the info out....

Best thing to do is print out the rotating CP plans in sections (at full size) and tape it all  together, making sure the grid lines line up.  Then scribble some pencil on the back, tape the plans to your wood, and trace the outlines of the CP end plates to transfer the lines to the wood for cutting & drilling.  That's the hardest part to measure, but it ended up going pretty smoothly, using the full-sized plans.

1UP, nice job!  I am about 75% done with building my cab and I too am building a rotating control panel, though doesn't look quite like yours.  I didn't see your site until I already had half the cab built so left to my own devices I went with a triangular shaped control panel that looks like the superman logo (exactly the shape you show on your site as the first idea you had that you scrapped because the longer joysticks wouldn't fit).  That issue doesn't really come into play with me since I am using all "normal" joysticks, now large tron style.

And to be comepletely into overkill, not only is my control panel rotating with 3 sides, I am making the sides removable/interchangable so I can swap out sides if I want too.  I am going up with just 3 sides, but I am sure I'll want to add a couple of other layouts in the future - but even if I don't, I find making the sides modualr makes them easier to remove to work on them if they need maintenance.

Anyway, good work!  I love the cab!

Doug

That's why I only made one of the sides modular.  I knew I wanted to have some flexibility for add-ons, but 99.99% of the time, I would be playing games that use either 4-way, 8-way, or trigger sticks, trackball, or spinner.  If you make them all modular, I'd like to see how you do it.  I figured it would add too much complexity to an already complex design!

For the maintenance issue, I just hinged the 2 main panels for easy access.  Easier to work on the controls without having to disconnect everything and completely remove the panels.  Much better to do diagnostics when things are still hooked up for testing!

1UP,

Are you planning on making your 3D models available for download for people like me who would like to use 3ds MAX to plan a cab? The models for the Raider Pro joystick, the happ joysticks and the buttons would be especially helpful to me.

Thx,
EA

I'll do this at some point.  I need to go in and export the parts, and also fix the pushbuttons.  I found the button dimensions were off, which affected the layout of my controls.  Once I fix this, I'll post the models somewhere.

OK, I've put the 3D arcade control models on my site, you can get them HERE (http://www.1uparcade.com/arcade-downloads.html).

Lots of other site updates:

- Expanded the Software page to include pics and info on skinning Windows and the Emulaxian frontend.

- Expanded the Hardware page to include pics and info on the controls and interfaces inside Pac-Mamea.

- Updated the Links page, with a new category dedicated to other rotating control designs!

- Added lots of photos and info to almost EVERY page (especially General Construction) and sharpened up or replaced many of the older photos for easier viewing.

- Added a bunch of links to the Artwork page, where you can find all the artwork used in the production of my cab!

Sweet 1UP! These will be great to use for planning my cab (someday). Are these the same models you used for your renderings? Or do you have high rez models for that?

Same ones I used.  When I say "low detail", I mean they are good enough for rendering at a medium distance, but would not pass for photo-real in really close views.  But more than adequate for planning!

lookling sweeeeettt  :D
why not export your cab model to w3d then you could use it as the default cab in the frontend when no other cab is matched.
You could even at a simple bone structure and let the control panel spin... ;)

Everytime I see this cab, I want to put my existing berzerk mame machine in the closet and start on this one!  This is without a doubt one of the coolest ideas I have seen (although it could use the addition of drink holders for each player ;D)  Nice work!

Won't they spill when you rotate the panel?

I almost resisted saying it but I couldn't hold myself down...

Old reference (I was just barely TV viewing age when the gong show was on in case you missed the ref) ;)
