Title: Mame & PinMame in a pinball cab - Project Completed!
Post by: DefJam on July 30, 2005, 02:11:48 pm
Hi all,

This is my first post here but this site and group of users has been feeding my addiction to classic gaming for a few years now (and I've got a bunch of miscellaneous arcade parts to prove it  :))

Anyway I wanted to share my first MAME cabinet.  I know there have been a bunch of folks that have been putting Pinmame in their arcade cabs but I'm not sure that it's been done the other way around.... (although I've seen two Pinball dedicated pinball cabs that were very very cool)

Pics of "Pinball - The Next Generation"  cabinet can be found at

http://home.comcast.net/~ataritoday/

Maybe I should rename it, as it plays MAME and consoles as well.  Anyway I would love to hear your thoughts, questions and suggestions.

Thanks for looking.  Feel free to sign the guestbook or shoot me a note back.

Jim

I sure hope you didn't gut an STTNG for that, as it looks like you may have... that's a $2500 pinball machine.

Very original concept.  Nice work.

From the website it sounds like he didnt:  "Unfortunately gutted long before me. The widebody cab allows more controls and the monitor to fit."

Eventually, I want to obtain all 3 Star Trek Pinball Machines. Nice work.

Excellent work, very cool concept.
I hope to build some sort of cabinet around Vpinball someday, it sees a lot of play in my Mame cab.

Thanks for the comments...  I like the way it turned out...   I often find my self nudging the cabinet.... which is kind of cool... (it will be even cooler when I get the nudge to work instead of buttons).

Question for the group ? ? ?  Does anyone know where I could find some hi res photoshop Star Trek Next Gen artwork.  The picture in the machine is nice, but it's pretty low-res and it's printed on paper.... I'd like to get something a bit more professional but was hoping to find some hi res artwok to make it worthwile.  Anybody have any links ?  I did some searching but came up empty.

The next step in major wow factor would be to get that mame sign out of the place where the LCD is supposed to be......and somehow (albeit, for all i know it's impossible to accomplish) have pinmame actually run the screen on an LCD panel mounted in there....now that would make things authentic

special note: if this is already done and possible since i dont' really know guys as i havne't messed pinmame much, you really need to get to doing that...and somehow needs to tell me how to do it

Even better yet, Remove the entire back glass and replacement with a flat panel monitor that recreates the original back glass of the games you're playing. I'm pretty sure it's doable, too.

It is, though any games with DMD would be harder... plus most games before that score through the backglass.

You could run a small size LCD monitor in there, and then just extend your desktop onto the second monitor, placing the large size DMD display there.

Pinmame/VPinball will remember where you put the display the next time it boots up. Or it should. :)

Have you given any thought to buying a replacement STNG backglass and sticking that in there? They have every other Williams/Bally '90s pin backglass for sale, you should be able to find one for your cab. And if you decide to not, go with the LCD in the backglass, I'd leave the Mame logo. Or maybe reprint it in red tone colors, and backlight it as well. :)

Nice job on your cabinet!

Wow, you guys have some great ideas!  I think the DMD idea is really cool and I think would be pretty easy to do.

I also really like the idea of having an LCD for the entire backbox... it would be neat if it could display the real backbox translite for the pin you are playing... this I have no idea how to do, but it would be very cool.  Could also have it display cool movies or demo's while playing MAME  !  Ok, I may have to expand my budget for this project...    You now have me wanting at least 2 very large LCD monitors, a small one for the DMD and frankly I need a decent computer for inside the cab.. using my laptop works... but not ideal....   Not to mention that I know want everything to be neon....  this is going to be endless isn't it......  :)

Not only that, I feel like I need to give something back on the software side, but have no skills to do it...  would love to do something for the 3D arcade project.

Hope everyone is doing well!  It's been one hot summer in Philadelphia.
