So tell me, what's the fascination with the convex pushbuttons? I know, it's a matter of taste, but somehow it just doesn't feel right to me.
Maybe I'm just old, and can't remember anything other than the concave ones. :D
Does anyone have a list of a few original games that actually used the convex buttons?
Just curious.

I've seen CVS2 machines and other fighting game machines which use a combination of Convex and concave buttons. i.e. concave for kicks and convex for punches.
I didn't find much of a difference in terms of play.... however the convex buttons were less hard on my hands when mashing out of dizzy or grabs.
BTW, the convex buttons have horizontal microswitches :)

They both have horizontal don't they?
Plus the competition button are a bit cheaper.

Use concave and avoid comp buttons(I hate those).
Comps just dont look so called "arcadey".
Sorry I was wrong. :P

Ummm, the competition buttons are convex. How can you use them and avoid them at the same time?!? :P

Ma bad..supposed to be the other way around :P.
Here is pictures where it clearly shows how bootleg these comp buttons look.

AND,from what i know(could be wrong)..only capcom vs snk 1&2 and mars matrix uses convex buttons.

IIRC, some of the Japanese arcade games and some fighters used convex buttons.
They supposedly have lighter feel and faster response than the horizontal microswitch pushbuttons.
However, as 1Up pointed out a week ago, you can get a similar effect by REMOVING the springs from the horizontal microswithch pushbuttons. I would recommend sticking with these and if the effect is not what you want, just pop the springs back in.

As someone who is way too into Street Fighter and its variants I can tell you I prefer the convex buttons. Even though I started out playing before they were used and was content, I'm glad they're popular now.
They feel quicker. I know it sounds like it shouldn't matter, but the less vertical distance it has to travel the faster and more responsive it feels. They're also easier on the fingers for real extended periods of time.

The concave ones come in both horizontal and vertical.
Convex ones only come in horizontal.
I agree that the convex ones don't look as arcadey.

most arcade uses those "cave in" style buttons (concave)...
however... some neogeo arcades do uses those convex buttons....
the convex buttons do have lighter feel.... if you're looking to break record in hyper olympics... maybe convew buttons could help....
I've tried removing the springs... it does feel lighter... but somehow... it feels strange.... (maybe it needs getting used to...)
but for my own cab... (that is still building and currently no progress...) I'm using concave horizontal buttons....
(cos I think they feel more "real" (like most old-school arcades....) ;) ;D

Hi all,
I just went through this process of decision a little while ago too! I decided on the convex ones. I realised that almost all arcade machines use concave buttons but I thought I would give the convex ones a whirl.
I am pleased that I did. Main reason, and one that no one has yet mentioned is not because they are "quicker" but because when moving from one button to another, it is easier.
I will explain - for something like a shooter where your finger(s) will be solely concerned with one button and mashing it as quickly as possible, I see no problem with the concave design. Indeed it could well be preferable as your finger is only moving up and down a very little bit so you keep in the dimple and always hit the centre of the button.
With fighting games where you are slamming buttons and moving from one to the other at great speed (though I would love a hand with six fingers!), it is more comfortable with the convex design. if you hit the edge of a dimple button you are hitting a ridge and that means that all the force of you mashing that thing is concentrated on a small part of your finger. With a concave button, you hit a much larger surface and it is therfore better for your fingers.
This, of course only really matters when you hit the button off center, but this often happens in fast and furious fighting games so I deem it rather worthwhile.
Also - it happens even more often in games (like sfa) where you have to push a whole row of buttons at once! People with smaller hands will more likely hit the middle button well but those on either side, not so well.
Anyways, that is my 2c and I hope it gives thought to anyone, who is having trouble deciding.
phill.

Just when everyone though snaake's tag lines were the most annyoing in the world bass comes out with a even bigger one.
Guys I'm not trying to be mean here but complaints about large or flashy tags have been filtering up to the admins. If they feel it's becoming a problem they will disable them all together, and it's starting to come to that.
Please bandwith limits aside, try to keep your tags small and subtle. I think that it's a cool feature and would hate to see it be removed. I'm just giving you fair warning before someone more "official" does.

Well the reason why I like competition pushbuttons, is they feel just like the buttons they use on japanese arcade machines. I know the japanese button's have a crazy bottom-side, but the top sides both feel very similar, and I actually prefer them if I'm going to be playing a lot of fighting games or games where I gotta push the button a million times *IE: Zero Gunner 2, Mars Matrix, Giga Wing 2*
Horizontal pushbuttons feel great though, they are pretty light on your fingers and can be pressed many many times without conflict, but I really dislike my vertical pushbuttons I got on my original arcade stick, wayyyyy too stiff, hurts your hands in MvC2 when you do a super, and they stick up higher than the other 2 buttons.
