I have spent far too much time trying to get sound in DOS - as much as I love the results of advmame no sound is er, well it's just not right is it?
Firstly, the hardware - bargain basement stuff so don't get excited!
Asrock 741GX mobo, 256mb DDR, ATI Radeon 7000, 40 gig HD, Taxan monitor all wraped up in a Universal Space Panic cocktail cab so the first requirement is proper orientation (vertical) for both front end and mame version.
So......
Win XP?
I have a SB128 PCI card - is there any benefit to using that over the onboard AC97?
What Frontend for vertical cab use (no keyboard)?
What version/derivative of MAME?
All ideas welcomed - I've got to get this show on the road asap!
Not that it matters much but P1 is stock 4/8 way joy whereas P2 is trackball ;)

personally I like GameEx http://www.gamex.net
It allows multiple emulators is ridiculously easy to set up with a great GUI config tool, has its own jukebox, movie player etc and also allows for other emulators, news feeds, external applications, advancemame and more.
It can be a little bit heavy and does need .NET installed but so far its been the best I have used

DOH!!!
Just found the well hidden vsync/ac97 command - the sound driver for onboard audio under DOS.
I have sound in DOS!! I know, I know - it's not much to get excited about but hey!
