Title: Sammy Cabs,Not very popular over here,Why?
Post by: DYNAGOD on July 21, 2005, 10:55:31 am
Why is is that the Sammy Atomiswave Cabinet is not very popular here in the US?
Im having one hell of a time finding ANY kind of relevant information on the cab itself as a result..
i know the sad, sub-dreamcast specs of the atomiswave itself, but theres literally no information on the cab specifially..IE monitor etc..
When i queried Sammy USA, they demanded to know why i wanted such detailed information..like i was going to reverse engineer their cab from knowing its monitor size and frequency range!
I just sold my Taito Egret this past sunday and now i feel this terrible vacuum from where my cab once stood screaming to be filled..Ironically i did it to save some money , but i find myself plotting to spend more than i ever did to find a replacement worthy of its glory. Arcade cabinets should be classified as a schedule I narcotic ! :)
My new fixation...the atomiswave cabinet..

granted i cant play the vertical shooters on it i love so.. but that nothing a second atomiswave cab and a few weeks in the machine shop cant fix.. :P
I really want one of these cabs..but im a little cautious due to the utter lack of information, and moreso interest here stateside.. i like to know what im getting myself into..

One deterrent is the cost. The last Sammy cab I found ran about $1700. Most people balk at that kind of cash for a cab.

Personally, I like stuff that's more retro looking than that.

I played a shooting game for the atomiswave at my local Wally World.

The guns themselves are freaking awesome but it took a while to get used to the sights on em. There are two sets of crosshairs that you have to align to be accurate shooting targets, ones is located at the front of the sight barrel and the other is towards the rear. It was pretty tricky to match em up and get a good shot but you get used to it. The guns were clear translucent and the sights had a red bead in the center, very cool.

Id like to play Dolphin Blue but ive never seen that game around here.

I've ordered a Sammy mobo and some carts including Dolphin Blue which just looks incredible. The Sammy all looks pretty nice. Amazing Sega keeps doing with modifications of the same sorts of technology (NAOMI, Dreamcast, Sammy).

I think it would look cool as a jukebox. I am with stingray. I like the retro look of most older videogame cabs.

after days of searching, using google, metacrawler, yahoo etc I could only come up with one piece of cabinet porn.. ONE!!
Shes presenting  :P

unfortunetly I found out how much it weight as well...378 pounds  :o
shipping will not be kind

I love older cabs as well.. but at the same time ive grown tired of them and their blatant  lack of attention to aesthetic (byoac built cabs excluded,im talking retail cabs) they really havent changed one bit from being boxs with a window cutout for a monitor.. the atomiswave cab just has a style and a look about it, primarily brought about by its slanted laid back angle and its strong marquee. As much as i love old school cabs, theres something to be said about moving forward in cab design as well.
Id really REALLY like to get my hands on one of these and modify it into a vertical cab..

Nice money shot!  ;D

I didn't realize before I ordered it that it was a combo JAMMA / VGA. This will make a nice addition to my NAOMI cab.

i know the sad, sub-dreamcast specs of the atomiswave itself...
As I recall, it's actually identical to the DC, save that it uses ROM carts instead of GD-ROM disks.
...
Which makes it a disappointing step down from the NAOMI, NAOMI2, and Hikaru boards(we'll leave Chihiro and Triforce out of it as they aren't even related).

yea the whole concept behind its development was cost reduction. A mantra which clearly ended before cabinet development began, with its 1700.00$+ pricetag.
I could honestly care less about the atomiswave system, i just want the cab..

Operators aren't buying new tradition systems much anymore, thats why you aren't seeing much about the Atomiswave, as no one is buying the things.

They do have one at the Tilt in Northwest Plaza in St. Louis. It was (like every other video title they had there) unoccupied when I was last there.

Yea, it doesnt help that their game lineup is very generic and very uninspired.
and yea its definetly no egret, but i gotta tell yea, more people find the egret to be obtuse than the atomiswave. when my non-gaming friends would come over and see my egret they thought it was odd or some kind of a toy. their idea of an arcade machine is the standard MDF american arcade cab..anything deviating from that simple form ISNT an arcade machine to them.

Joystick games are dead in America. Very, very, very few of them come out each year, and the ones that do come out universally bomb. And those expensive Madden and Tekken 5 machines that just flopped aren't helping the operators opinions of joystick games very much.

I was just explaining this to my friend the other day, the ONLY games on the entire boardwalk near me which consists of like 10 arcades, that have joysticks, are the classics. there are no new games that have came out recently and use joysticks that are in use over here. The only fighting game on the entire damn boardwalk is tekken 5 and that game sucks no one plays it. I kind of felt bad cause the op that bought it is a really cool guy hes informed on the bemani music scene and keeps up with that and initial D. but he was all psyched about getting it in i knew it wouldnt do well, i wouldnt be surprised if he pulled it by the end of the month.

the guy will rent out an expensive ass tekken 5 machine but wont listen to me that a popn machine would bring people from all over since the closest one is in RI. but yeah..

yea those tekken 5 cabs are a crime..I dont know how they can justify the cost of selling those at such a premium.

My dilema is that a 1700-2200$ atomiswave cab plus shipping could buy a sweet brand new multisync, hell i could get two and make dedicated horizontal and vertical cabs, plus all the trimmings from happs. all with enough money to spare to buy two or three really nice PCB's/Kits..
but will what i build be as nice as having one of those sweet looking cabs..
its tough,, reason and logic only plays a small part in decisions like these :P

Wait a few years, the continuing downward spiral of the industry assures that you should be able to get an Atomiswave later on for much cheaper.

Tekken 5 is the most money making game along side of Time Crisis 3 bringing in between $100-200 not including memory card sales at a local arcade!

the one in my arcade is a conversion and doesnt even have mem slots. but ive seriously never seen someone playing it when im in there. i played it once and got to like the 5th or 6th guy having no idea what im doing really, never was a tekken person.  killer instinct, MK3 and lower, and soul caliber are my games, oh and MvC2

Perhaps at a few very select locations, at most places the suckers seem to be sitting unused all the time. I have yet to every see anyone playing one.

I love the style of that, but have never seen one. Wouldn't mind making some hybrid version of it. I like the tilted back cab style and it seems pretty space efficient.
I think you should make the physical cabinet and control panel, and modify the monitor/marquee area in a way that works for ya. Shouldn't cost any more than doing a regular scratch-built.

id like to, what i need is a side shot of the cab. With that it would be no problem. i can get scale from certain elements like the coin door etc in other shots. but the critical item needed is a good, decent sized side shot. i havent been able to find much anything of interest image wise on this cab on the net.
