Is it possible to change the default player one positon from the right side of the cabinet to the left?
I am finishing up a 3 control panel cocktail cab and facing the front of the cabinet player one defaults to the right CP. Was this normal in the original cocktail cabs?

Well, original cocktails didn't have controls on three sides. Maybe you put the side controls on the wrong side?

I think that was a joke but again it has been a long day and will be a long night. From my memory of being a kid in the 80's I knew I never saw a 3 CP cocktail. I just described my cab so that I was clear in what I was asking about the side CP's.
Actually I remember the last time I played a cocktail cab. I was in the Boy Scouts on my way to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. We stoped at a Pizza Hut and we all had a go at Pacman. ;D
Boy those were the days.

For the affected vertical games, simply flip the screen in MAME (technique depends on version used and there are those better versed than I in the details).
Cheers.

Cool thanks CheffoJeffo. I'm using Mame .85. I don't know if I was clear. I can run vertical games vertically, and horizontal games horizontally, but I want to flip cocktail games so that player one is sitting on the left side of the cabinet.
Are you saying that there is a way to change this in Mame without altering the orientation of my 3 CP?
Thanks,

On my 3-sider, I use MAME32, so handle all of the configs through the menus, then run the games using MAMEWah.
For MAME, I thinkyou are looking for the -flipx / -flipy options, but I'm not the best MAME guy ... someone will undoubtedly chime in shortly with a more complete/correct answer.
Cheers.

Thanks again. Thats a starting point for me to look into. Any one else know anything about this?

If I understand you correctly, you can do what you want just by using the -rol or -ror tags for command prompt mame when you're running a vertical game. I have a vertical cocktail setup, and the 'player 1' and 'player 2' sides have slightly different controls. (one side has a spinner/joystick and the other side has a trackball/joystick). In addition to this, I have a small 2 player tabletop joystick setup that I can place on the cocktail, which is essentially the 3rd (horizontal position) control panel. Basically, my machine looks like this:
screen
trackball screen spinner
screen
2 joysticks
If I want to play a streetfighter type game, I just run mame as is. The screen is oriented horizontally, and everything is fine.
If I want to play a vertical spinner game like tempest, where player 1 is the spinner side, I run mame with a -rol tag, which rotates the screen orientation to the the left.
If I want to play a vertical trackball game like centipede, where player 1 is on the trackball side, I run mame with a -ror tag, which rotates the screen orientation to the right.
Does this clear things up?
Good luck,

Yes thanks 88mph :D
If I understand you I can set up each game with -rol and all the cocktail games will have player 1 on the left side.
So this setting is in mame.ini? Or do I have to set up some kind of dat or ini file for each game?

autoror or autorol options in mame.
