I have a street fighter alpha 3 "b" board and it has no label, and when you power it up, it says"this is street fighter alpha 3" with "sample version" on the screen instead of "usa" like on mame, do I have a prototype?
-
What color is the board? Blue? Green?

Blue

sounds like a proto (well location test maybe..) or a hacked board / bootleg.
as much as I hate the guy I suggest you conatct Razoola about it over at ( http://cps2shock.retrogames.com/ ), would be nice to see it dumped and as you probably know those CPS2 boards are quite fragile.

For the record, there's nothing wrong with raz. I've talked to him a few times over the years and he's been nothing but kind and accomidating.
However the mame team often disrespect him buy adding games to mame that he hasn't decided to dump yet.
Everybody says that he's hoarding roms, well that may be, but for everyone's complaining about him, nobody seems to be willing to do the dumps, even though everyone says any idiot can do it. My point is you can't complain something is easy if you aren't willing to do it yourself and you can't complain about someone doing things on their own timetable when they are the only person willing to take the time to do it in the first place.
If the mame devs have such a problem with him, instead of resorting to trickery and intimidation, they should simply figure out his rom-dumping technique and set the guru up with a rig. But that would be taking the high road and make too much sense, so we can't have that.
Be careful what you say here haze, these aren't the mameworld boards, I will chime in. :police:

Oh get over yourself Howard. How do you manage to fit all that ego in one tiny little body?
I'm sure 99% of the people here expect you to "chime in" with blatant self-inflation these days. I fail to recall the last time you ever said anything positive or constructive on these boards.
I'm sure Haze trembles in his boots when warned by the mighty Howard. Pfft.

I personally think Howards right here. Raz had his reasons for not releasing roms.
But I don't believe MAME team every released a version that supported roms that wherent dumped, but just not public yet (otherwise how would they know the crc on the xor files?)
Some people donated their boards to be dumped on the terms that he wouldn't release them until they resold the boards (they price of the boards drop once they are fully emulated... drop like a rock). Now I don't feel thats always a nice thing (since he might sell it to someone whos trying to have it dumped... and why you should always ask your dump expert before buying a board just for dumping... another topic). But anyway..where was I??? oh yeah, if someone request him to hold off public release of xors for whatever reason (till their grandmothers birthday?) then Raz should follow the request. Heck, these aren't his boards hes dumping.
Then he also held back to add some time between dumps (originally). I'm glad for this. If he released all the street fighter games, I don't believe I would have played many/most of them. It was nice to see them released in about the order they came out.
Then he also waited longer then mame did for the age. (IE it was more then 3 - 5 years). This is up to him. If he wanted a 10 year rule because he thought it was the best for the arcade industry (not the emulation industry) then good for him. Get over it.
And... As Howard mentioned... Someone else could have done it if it was that easy... so they should have.
I just wish all the bitching back and forth between groups would stop. I'm sure lots of the bad blood started with something small. Then became power plays. I'm also sure that I missed a ton of items since I don't keep up on IRC. And try and skip lots of little squabbles

my issue is with information / methods, not roms.
Raz is very secretive over the exact method needed to get decrypted data from the boards.
This means Raz and only Raz has control over which CPS2 boards are dumped and decrypted, prevents any attempts for real decryption to be done, and forces all CPS2 boards to be shipped to Finland of all places.
Compare that to the Sega decryption where all information was shared, and bases were set up all over the world to decrypt the Sega boards (in US, Europe, Japan etc.) this is much more beneficial to everybody. There are still boards we can't find, but we can be pretty sure if they do turn up we'll have somebody able to deal with it regardless of location.
We could try and work it out ourselves, but that would be reinventing the wheel, and any funds we do have are better spent elsewhere than killing CPS boards in trying to find out something that somebody already knows but won't share.
As a Mamedev I prefer the approach of sharing every piece of information we have, we don't keep secrets, if somebody wants to know something we'll do our best to explain and help the cause. Raz likes to be in control, this benefits nobody but Raz IMO.

Hey haze, your a member of mamedev? If so/not then mabie you or someone else can help me with a question thats been lingering in the back of my mind for a while. Why is it that Street fighter 3 new generation/second impact/third strike are listed in the supported romset for mame when cps3 emulation is incomeplete, at best? Not complaining or anything, gives me an excuse to dust off a dreamcast, just courious is all.

P.S. If this is a thread hijack, my apologies.

There are loads of systems & games with incomplete emulation in MAME, why not CPS3?

CPS 3 uses a disc instead of roms...
If it was as simple as dumping a CD of information, it would be done by now (in fact if you look, you'll see many of the Jojo and SFIII "ROMs" around the place already). That doesn't mean that usable emulation exists.
CPSIII is a little more complex than that. The MAMEDevs have covered it in pretty good detail over on their own forum. Check it out and do a few searches.

Actually, For CPS III, the disc is needed to load the game into memory, but after you've done that, the disc is no longer needed to play the game. I've found that you don't even need it to stream music, as that is also read from memory.
If you want to swap games, however, you will need to load the new game into RAM using that game's disc, and to data for the old game will be lost.
I've got one of the rare Red Earth boards (not Warzard, but Red Earth) but unfortunately, I have no disc to go with it, so you could say that the CPS III Red Earth board I have is "dedicated" until I can find some kind soul taht will let me burn a copy of that disc.

You've already determined that your board is probably a proto/location test... why are you bumping this?
