on all the other forums i use when you click on a thread to view it the thread opens in a new window - rather than in the existing window. i think this would be an improvement to this forum.

To me that would be annoying and I have never seen that on a forum .
Depending on the browser you use...
IE: Hold shift when you click on the thread
Firefox: assuming you have middle mouse button set to open link in new tab just use middle mouse button. Also set it up to load them in the background, IE not take focus when they open. I do this, I queue up several threads I want to read by having them load in a new tab.

I second SirP on this one. I personally think it's annoying when sites send this to "_new" instead of the current screen/tab/frame. Many of the forums that used to do this are now going back to "_self" again because of that annoyance. If you must have this, I suggest the browser shortcuts that SirP has suggested (all browsers have this option in a dropdown when you right-click on the link).

Wouldnt affect me because I just open every thread with new posts on a new tab by middle clicking, and then walk away for 5 mins while it does its thing, when I come back I have several threads to read, closing each tab as read.

Same here. I open threads in a separate tab. So I have a browsing window for forums and the tabs are separate articles I read.
