Title: Rolled-on primer leaving bumps..
Post by: cid499 on July 12, 2005, 09:32:06 pm
Hey all,

In my search for proper painting technique, I've been using the search feature alot (though, after this post, most will probably say that I'm not using it enough).

Anyhow, my problem is this: Applying Kilz oil-based primer on MDF using Home Depot's finest foam roller, I am getting a very bumpy textured surface (prickly-looking.) What am I doing wrong? I plan on covering this with some satin black latex paint, but I want that to be semi-smooth. Should I just sand it down until its completely flat?

Thanks

Thin the paint a bit using mineral spirits (or whatever Kilz tells you to use) -- that will let it self-level more before it starts to dry.

And yes, sand your current "prickly" coat smooth before applying your next coat. Use a pretty fine grade of sandpaper (e.g. 180 or 220) unless the "prickles" are pretty big, in which case you might have to sand it with 100 or 150, then something finer. Then vacuum the surface, then wipe it down with a tack cloth.

Then you're ready to give it another go.
