Title: Popeye Resolution
Post by: namedos on July 11, 2005, 11:59:25 pm
This is the first time I've run into this.  I ran the Mame Resolution Tool to set up resolutions for the games that I'm running.  Decided to give Popeye a try and it uses a resolution a little different than most games.  So, using this Tool I tried using 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions but neither one of them showed the entire screen.  I tried changing the size of the screen but none of that helped.  The strange thing is that the few other games with that same native resolution all worked fine at 640x480.

I checked the forums under Popeye but didn't find anything.  Anyone ever run into this?  Thanks.

Popeye should be ok at 640x480, but you'll need to use hardware stretch (hwstretch 1) to get it to fill the screen.

The problem is that the screen is over filled.  I can't see the bottom three inches of the screen.  If I try any other resolutions it only gets worse.  Sometimes I can only see the corner of the screen.  Should I try turning off hardware stretching?

you can also use hwstretch, and then don't let mame change resolution OR bpp.  then unless your using an imbedded intel video chipset (or was that ibm?) you should be fine.  Of course, if you video card can't handle hwstretch (anything TNT or above should be fine) then it will run like crap.  But you should see everything ok

but if you don't have hwstrech or d3d stretching, then you better have a near exact resolution match.  Because the game will output in whatever it thinks is closest.  And that might not really be what you think it is.  (ie, it might double all pixels (very fast without hwstretching) and that might be 640x520 or something like that.

Also, make sure that your monitor isn't stretched out.  you might be able to change the settings of your video card to handle it.

You could try it...and as Lilwolf said check your monitor adjustment.  Most systems should be able to display 640x480 hwstretch fine I would say.

I've got an Arcade VGA card and a Betson multisynch monitor.  It displays all my other games just fine.  In fact when I try the few other games with this same native resolution they look fine as well at 640X480.

I tried adjusting the vertical and horizontal screen size of the monitor and it didn't make any difference.

I also tried at least ten different resolutions that were different than the native resolution and smaller than 640X480 and each of those left me with just a corner of the screen visible as it was so large.

Maybe it is just this particular ROM?

I have the same setup (arcade vga and betson multisynch) and Popeye works fine for me..I play it pretty frequently.  Not sure what resolution it's set on (not at my cab so can't say), but I'm sure its 640x480 as I ran the resolution tool as well.

I'd have said you need to check your monitor adjustment as well since I had to do adjustments to each resolution when I got my monitor (1 resolution would be ok, then another would not be adjusted correctly), but from your post it appears other 640x480 games are showing correctly so not sure what the problem is.

Well that is strange...got home and checked my settings and somehow a little gremlin had turned off hardware stretch.  Weird.  Thanks for the input guys.
