Just got a call from a friend I built a cabinet for. He was moving it and it fell forward. In the process the PC monitor slid off the shelf, through the bezel glass and crashed onto the floor.
Needless to say it's done, looks like the back of the neck cracked right off...he said there was a hissing sound.
My question to those who would know - is it safe to touch this thing...anything we should do first??

The sickenning hissing sound :(
that monitor's ready for the trash,it's broken...
-
pray that the hissing sound is the sound of a Genie coming out so you get a new, better, bigger and improve monitor ;D

Thats a horrible picture, makes me want to......... :'(

The hissing sound was the air rushing into the broken CRT (which is, after all, a giant vacuum tube). I'd put on a pair of heavy gloves, then carry it sadly to the trash. The caps are probably still charged (thus the gloves), but as long as you don't grab the big red wire with the suction cup, you should be okay.

Just pick it up. You're not going to get a shock. Just be careful of sharp edges.
Take it right to the recycle center.

Ok thanks guys, we'll be gentle with it...what a waste of a 22" monitor.
Amazingly nothing else got broken.

Strip it before you chuck it. The only thing I would be throwing out is the tube itself.

The Monitor PCB is still likely to be good, only bit you will have to throw away is the tube, remember to also remove the yoke from the tube as this belongs with the Monitor PCB. You will need this if you come across a replacement tube that you can use with the chassis.
