For weeks I have been having trouble with my PC. These days it isn't used much except for BYOAC and some Illustrator.
When clicking links my PC would stall, sometimes it would eventually link to a page, but more often than not it would just hang and time out. Very frustrating when trying to update my project and general clicking around.
I tried all the obvious stuff including virus/adware/spyware scans and tried uninstalling 1/2 my programs all with no success.
I was sure a mod was messing with my connection speeds because of the pic I posted (twice) of the big hairy dogs nuts that both times never seen the light of day for very long.
But tonight... A solution.
In Internet Explorer.....
Tools/Internet Options/Advanced
Restore defaults
Weeks of frustration for such a simple solution.

Tounge in cheek smart-ass Aussie humour mods, don't take offence.

hmmmmmmmmmm thats a thought.......
I've been having a problem with IE (at least that's what I've narrowed it down to) crashing my computer....
it will just shut down and restart at random only when I have a browser open (usually this page) I've runn everything I could think of. I even took my PC apart and blew everything off with compresed air and reseat everything.......
didn't try:
In Internet Explorer.....
Tools/Internet Options/Advanced
Restore defaults
now I'll try that before I go and Format and reinstall everything (don't really want to do that just yet

yup... QFT is quoted for truth. As for maxthon, it's pretty good, my gf uses it a lot, but...

After a few days it is now apparent my "hot tip" was a giant load of crap that fixed nothing in the long term.
Still have huge problems, now not sure if the problem is IE or my internet connection itself. >:( >:( >:(
-
More often than not when trying to help others with speed and connection issues I have found this to be a piece of spyware running in background that is in turn probing "somewhere else" before it actually loads where you want to go.
These can be a bear to find and squash. Doublecheck background tasks.
And I suggest Firefox as an IE alternative.
-
I am running adware & spyware removal software but I agree that it is possible something nasty must be in hiding.
I have never used anything but IE but at this stage I am willing to give anything a go. The problem has reduced my broadband connection to less than dial-up speed.
-
you need to go to www.helponthe.net go to the forums there theyre the best and deal with this all the time. they will want you to run a program called hijack this, which checks all background processes and stuff and outputs it into a text file which they can look over. they will find your problem
-
Cool. I will give this a whirl over the next day or so and give feedback on how this process went.
-
I did lots of stuff. Ran lots of scans. Removed stuff from the registry etc etc. I thought the problem was fixed but then it returned after a day or so and worse than ever.
I just installed Firefox and I don't ever remember my Internet Connection ever being this quick. (I have had a broadband connection for just on 12 months)
Right now I believe with all my heart that Microsoft Internet Explorer sucks big donkey balls.
The difference is absolutely staggering. The drop in speed must have been sneaking up on me for some time....
Fingers crossed <ouch>, problem is fixed even though I don't understand the true causes. ::)
-
hehe, i wasnt joking when i told you not to use IE =P
-
And now... just a couple of hours after installing and using Firefox, my problems have agained returned. I haven't been anywhere but here & google.
???
Sooooo frustrating & now beyond a joke. >:(
-
you definately have a regenerating spyware virus, sounds like youre not fully getting it out of the system and it keeps coming back. that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- is annoying, if you find out what virus in particular it is you can prolly DL a program designed jsut to take care of it. usually they have them for stuff that keeps coming back like that

Bro, you've GOT to download "Hijack This" and get some help with this before your system becomes unusable.
You'll probably have to restart in Safe Mode several times, DL fixes, etc.
After you've got everything back up and running, DON'T EVER use IE again. You'll find a few sites STILL pop up an IE window on you. Ever wonder why that's the popup window browser of choice?
If you're running XP and don't mind the slow browsing while waiting for someone to respond to your Hijack This log report, check to see what services are running and do a few Google searches to see if one of those are the blatant culprit. Not foolproof, but you may find it just that easily, but DON'T do that until you've started the Hijack This process in motion.
-
I also had a problem with crashes right after i would get online, i have many programs to get rid of things and it seems it worked, i will be getting firefox anyway.
-
It's quite the mystery.
I have several programs that check for spyware & adware plus using Norton 2005 and all come up clean. I still have some options so I am not going to smash my modem just yet.
Serves me right, I just know I shouldn't have visited all those naughty sites.
Who would have thought an addiction to big boobs could cause this many problems....?
-
this may be on topic or not. Is it internet explorer that keeps jumping to different windows you have just opened when you are typing? thus you end up typing stuff in the wrong window. is that easy to turn off? i keep TELLING the computer that when im good and ready to go to that window, i will click on it, thank you very much. but it never listens, it never listens. i think HAL is having issues with me...

Not for me, i would be fine unless i was online and opened IE then it would crash and restart my PC.
Firefox is great though.

Time to reload your hard drive....
-
Here's your hot tip of the day. This works SO well, I tell ALL my relatives who call me with their computer problems to do this. It works EVERY time it's tried. Give it a shot.
- Get a box, preferably a big one.
- Place your pc inside it (see, told you a bigger box is preferable ;D )
- Set the box out on the curb with the rest of the weekly trash
- Call Dell or Gateway
- Lather, rinse repeat if necessary

Last night I ran most of the programs recommended in this thread plus a few others. They all came up rosy and found nothing. There is no change in my problems but I have noticed what seems to be a trend....
Web sites I have never visited seem to cause less problems, much less problems.
Pages I frequent often seem to be much worse with BYOAC being the major offender practically bringing my PC to a stop. :(
I really don't want to have to start from scratch with a re-format. It's just not my idea of fun.

If you ran Hijack This, nothing WILL show up for you. It isn't intended to be a "here's what your problem is" kind of program. It'll generate a log that you'll then post for others to decipher and tell you what the problem is and how to go about fixing it.
I can't say this to you in person where my vocal inflection would let you know I'm not saying this dick-like, so please realize this when you read this: If you were able to read the log, you would already know how to fix your problem already, and wouldn't need the program.
There are quite a few places out there that will use your Hijack This logfile to help ya. I'll see if I can scare up a few links and post 'em for you.
-
Yeah I ran Hijack This and went through the list line by line and done some searches for the entries. Everything looks legitimate.
-
Okay, here you go. I've DL'ed stuff from these guys before, but never had anything bad enough to need Hijack This....
First and foremost - BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT, READ THIS:
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407)
Download site for Hijack This:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html)
Stuff to read BEFORE posting your Hijack This logfile there:
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=38752 (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=38752)
There are some tools there to help you read your file, but just let someone else help you this time, and read up on it a bit later. Mebbe next time you'll be able to try reading your own file and see if you've got the hang of it. The FIRST time is NOT the time to try reading it yourself - you risk stuffing it up worse yourself ;D
-
I have that problem once....
and I'm quite careful on where I surf....
it turns out its because I have not defragmented my HD for too long and maybe some core files are fragmented....
after like defragmenting my drive, then use continuous mode for like 1 day straight, (my HD is now only moderately fragmented) and speed is normal again...
so, I would say, try defrag your HD...
-
Well I must confess, it is some time since I ran a defrag..... Tonight I shall do this.
I can actually "see" the problem. I click on a link and nothing happens on the modem. I can click, click, click.... still nothing. Then I click again and all the lights start flashing and everything is normal for another 30 seconds or so.
Last night out of 3 hours, I had about 5 minutes in total where my modem appeared to be behaving normally. This makes it hard to actually download stuff that might fix or even assist in identifying the problem.
