Odd choices, mostly all clumped in from one era, then with a couple 70s ones thrown in, and one current one.
Does the character of Frasier hold the record for single longest running sitcom character, since he personally played Frasier for 20 years over 2 different long running shows, or was their some other longer running character?
Also, cartoons are not sitcoms.

Also, cartoons are not sitcoms.
Why not?
It is the exact same format, but the characters are animated. sitcom is short for situational comdy. Simpsons doesn't fit that? I've acctually had this discussion many times. The television academy currently doesn't recognize the simpsons as anything. Calling it a cartoon doesn;t do it justice at all. Cartoon has a newspaper reference, but when we are talking about TV it ussually means, childrens programming. It is at least an animated comedy, but it still seems closeminded to me to say it's not a sitcom. This is no different than the endless music debates over which genere a group fits in. They ussually end with people ticking with a gut feeling and not establishing clear criteria.
Another example, "The Larry Sanders Show" - Gary schandling insitst it's not a sitcom, because he doesn't want to get lumped in with Urkle and Full House. But his show does follow the formula for a sitcom.

ELR.
Special mention to Patricia Heaton, the hottest MILF on the planet.
-
Not really a sitcom, but I would have to say Arrested Development.
Best TV comedy EVER? The BBC version of The Office. Easily.
-
Fawlty Towers anybody? How about Father Ted or Only fools and horses??

Agrred without a shadow of a doubt.
-
Murphy Brown? Never saw a single funny episode. That leathery chick is annoying.
It's like dude watched one night of early 90s NBC and decided to make a list.
The list probably begins and may end with Married With Children.
-
Arrested Development, Simpson, Seinfeld and Family Guy. None of them fit within the conventional idea of a sitcom, which is why they're the best. Simpsons has been waning though (I'm even forced to admit that), Arrested Development make take two or three viewings to truly get into and Seinfeld... well... the last episode was really disappointing.
-
I think MASH ran for longer than any of those.
What makes a sitcom "the best"?
-
I do.

What's the difference between comedy and sitcom?
My personal favorites "comedies" are
ALF
Unhappily Ever After
Night Court
Red Green
Red Dwarf
Monty Python
Are You Being Served
Mr. Bean
I have to like Mystery Science Theater 3000 because it was created by a fellow UW-Stout alumni :)

After thinking, I realize there are many others I should have included. I havent seen WKRP in so long I forgot about it.
-
SEINFELD
Best. Show. Ever.
-
What about SOAP!!! I still consider that the funniest sitcom of all time.
Geo
-
Seinfeld, Family guy, Everybody loves raymond, Married with children.
Not a sitcom but "Who's line is it anyway" is good.
Simpsons was the best cartoon till Family Guy came out.
-
CHARLES IN CHARGE!
duh.
;D
-
Sledge Hammer.
Certainly not the near the best ever, but I found it amusing.
-
I have never seen an episode of Seinfeld that I found even a little amusing. It's the same crap as 100 other sitcoms. A bunch of neurotic idiots in NYC sitting around complaining. THAT has never been done before. ::)
-
Would the A-Team be considered a sitcom? Otherwise I'd say Good Times.
-
Lots of great shows on the list for sure. Picking out a best would be way to difficult for me, some of the shows mentioned I loved when they were new, but they just don't strike me as funny when I see them again. Seinfeld is one of the biggest offenders of that one for me, plus I thought the final episode was probably the biggest anticlimax in series television history.
I'd be lying if I said I never laughed at Married With Children, but ultimately it just never did it for me. To me it just seemed like a never ending series of 'Peg's horny' jokes.
My top picks would be (in no order whatsoever):
WKRP in Cincinatti
All in The Family
Taxi
Cheers (until Shelly Long left the show)
Absolutely Fabulous
Soap
I've got to say I'm shocked that no one mentioned Fresh Prince of Bel Air :P
-
No one's mentioned Shape D.'s favorite.........
The Golden Girls

A friend of mine was talking about that show when we were in high school and said something about "the hot one". :-X We still give him a hard time about that.
-
Growing up it was
Alice
Welcome Back Kotter
One Day at a Time
Different Strokes
Old episodes of Facts of Life
A-Team
Growing pains
Family Ties
then
Saved by the Bell (yeah, I admit it!) (Tiffany Theisen aka Tiffany Amber just got married!)
Martin
then
Seinfeld
Friends
now
X-Play
Cinematech
Judgment Day
Icons
Ahhh...the evolution of ignorance.... 8)

I cant stand Friends, but Seinfeld and Fraiser are some of my favorites. Also really liked WKRP, All in the Family, and The Jeffersons

Got both whole series comming from netflix here soon i hope.. lol
Used to have em all on VHS.. but yeah.. :(
-
So, since the a few of the Frasier characters ran the whole run of both Frasier AND Cheers then that WOULD make them the longest running sitcom characters? ???
-
I'm surpised you don't like seinfeld then, minus the NYC part.
No, my point was that I have no tolerance for a bunch of neurotic idiots sitting around complaining. That's 95% of Seinfeld's content.
-

How about Coupling? That one makes me laugh so hard I can't see. Someone already mentioned Fawlty Towers, but it's worth mentioning again. Funniest thing John Cleese was ever involved in outside of Python.

I never watched Frasier, but the Frasier character didn't come into Cheers until it had been going for a few seasons iirc. What other characters from Cheers appear in that show?

-
They pretty much all make appearances sooner or later, but the only truly reoccurring one is Lillith, I think.
-
Dick Van Dyke show--no contest.
-
Stupid censors. Fraiser was on Cheers in its first season. In the fraiser series finale, he made a remark about how it feels like he's been playing the same character for 20 years.
-
He's lying, he's only been playing Sideshow bob for like 13.
-
Dick Van ---auto-censored--- show--no contest.
Interesting that D yke is censored, but his first name is not. I never really thought the name of that show was funny until now. :)

Looks like you should listen to your mom the next time when she says doing something will make you go blind... :o

One of my favorite quotes from that show:
Is there anything I could possibly say or do at this point that would not make me look like a chronic serial masturbator? camera pans over to a stack of toilet paper rolls on the coffee table
