Is it stupid to mix 512 ddr400mhz with 512 ddr266mhz? the latter is from my old pc
-
Not necessarily.
If your processor/motherboard can't handle higher than 266, then there's normally no problem (unless you've got a Dell or other proprietary system that wants specific memory). I'm not sure about Intel systems, but if you're running AMD you need a 2500XP or higher to run 333MHz, and a 2800XP for 400MHz. So if you've got a 2500XP or better, you will probably be slowed down to 266MHz. You'd be better off selling the 266 to someone else and buying another 400MHz stick.
Also, you probably can't run them as dual-channel in any system, but you can still get the benefit of the extra memory.

ok my cpu is a 2800 amd 64 754 so it is safe for me to add 400mhz and 266mhz correct?
-
Safe, yes, but it will probably slow all your memory access down to 266MHz. Your system will most likely run better (faster) with the single 400MHz module.
-
it WILL slow your ram down to 266mhz, no ifs or buts. You will also be much more prone to memory problems when you mix ram. Your athlon 64 is not a regular athlon... it wants to see PC3200 ram or better.
CAN you do it? Yes
Will it work? Maybe
Is it worth the chance? No.
Ram prices are dirt cheap these days... it's not worht the hassle and potential problems, not to mention that large speed drops you will see if you do memory intensive applications on your PC.
Stick with your one stick of 400, or sell off the 266 for a few bux and get yourself a matching stick of 400 if you want two sticks of ram.

All right thanks
