Glad to hear that Xmame is now so playable. Last I looked, performance wasn't too great. Time to load up my memory stick and give it a whirl!

There are two excellent Sega Genesis emulators too and they run great at 333MHz. That's what my PSP has been doing for the last several weeks anyway.

I have to admit the PSP is looking better all the time. Still too rich for my tastes though. I'm sure I'll end up getting one once they drop in price a bit.

Just make sure that you get an older one. The current ones ship with bios 1.51 +. These emulators only work on 1.50 or lower.

You can get them used for around $200 now. Just make sure that it's 1.50 or lower.

People are still managing to buy 1.50 versions from Gamestop and Best Buy. I don't think that all of the U.S. stock of older units is completely exhausted yet. But it's true that 1.51 or 1.52 is what Sony is now shipping in the U.S. Still, you have a shot of getting a 1.50 unit brand new right now.

....enjoy this while you can...I've read that Sony is going to FORCE updates to the newer version as they release newer games.

So....just like the Xbox software mods being rewritten by some games....the bios for the PSP will be updated as well.

They've even implied that some updates may cause the PSP to crash if you're running various emulators forcing you to send it back to Sony.

Sigh. Unless you only use the PSP for retro games....eventually you'll load a game that may crash the system.

the hackers say they are weeks away from fixing this issue.  you should beable to downgrade the firmware or just diable the firmware checks in games.

wont be long.

waiting for price to drop to buy one too.

I think its just a matter of preventing anyone from doing anything they don't want you to. Sony historically has always done this with every product they make. Look at Beta; memory sticks; Discman etc. etc. It's all about controlling their properties....look at good old Nintendo....same deal there.

Besides...if you're busy downloading free emulated games....why buy theirs? I know once I discovered my XRom for GBA....I never purchased a game again.

Basic business in motion here....and self preservation.

Just curious, can you flip the orientation of the screen?  I ask because your shot of Mr Do wouldn't look too bad if it were oriented 90 deg clockwise.
Thanks,

That would be cool if you could flip it, as vertical games seem like they'd do well on that wide screen that way, but I gotta figure controlling them would be a bit of a pain. :)

I had heard this was possible from a friend of mine who thinks he can get SNES/NES games running on his PSP thru a GTA hack in the game.  He also reported that with the current firmware of the PSPs out now that XMame does not work.  Can anyone speak to this?  I do not have a PSP and don't really want one, but if I could MAME it it makes it way worth the price.

If you get a PSP, find one that hasn't been updated to the newest firmware. You want 1.5 or 1.0

With 1.5 you don't need any GTA hack. You just run a plain emulator from the memory stick. I'm running SNES/NES, Sega Genesis, Atari 2600 and a bunch of cool homebrew titles. No hacks required.

Go here and you'll learn everything you need to know:

Really after reading some the stuff i could do i just want one for doom and emulators.  but the firmware only updates if you try and play a game that is relatively new correct.  so as long as i dont try and play the newest games (which i wont) then im good.

Dude, there are ways around everything.

The new games do "require" you to update to the latest firmware(Sony's attempt to squash homebrew), but there are even little programs out there that you download to your memory stick that will make your psp "act" like it is the newest firmware thereby fooling the game and allowing you to play.

well im just saying the main reason for me to get a psp is for homebrew.  from what ive read so far it seemed as though they didnt have these "little programs" ready yet.

I've had these programs since about a month after the PSP was released.

Your best bet is getting a used 1.5 on Ebay or something. Most new ones in the stores have the latest firmware.

Check overstock.com as well. After discounts you can usually get one from there for $225 free shipping no tax.

For those of you who are worrying about getting a PSP that is version above 1.50, there is a hack out that that let's you downgrade from version 2.00 to version 1.50. Do some research on the PSP downgrader.

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/downgrade_psp_2.cfm

Basically, any PSP version 2.00 and below should be fine (if you get a version 1.51 or 1.52, then upgrade to 2.00, and use the downgrader).

However, newer games are requiring the newer firmwares (I believe the lastest is version 2.6, but some hacking progress has been made on that).

There is also a SNES Emulator, but I don't know if it can handle most/all games at full speed + sound (I personally don't have a PSP, but am looking to get one in the future).

That downgrader has been available for months now.  There is also a new loader now for 2.6 PSPs, although it cannot do everthing a 1.5 can.

The SNES emu is very nice, and a good number of games run on it.  I've mentioned it before here, but I can't recall what thread it was in.

If you havn't got a psp and are really interested in handheld emulation then you should give the gp2x another look its got a great version of mame, much better than psp and the screen is more suited for it too, plus tv-out.

check out this thread at the bottom, i've supplied some pictures aswell.
