I think I am going to go for a 3" Happ trackball for my next CP (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,39463.0.html) . They have them availiable in a high and low profile versions. I have read that the lower profile version is better for Golden Tee while the higher one is better for other games. I am not too bothered about Golden Tee so I am thinking that I will go with the high ball, especially as I will be using a lexan overlay. I just thought I would get your other guys opinions before ordering one.
I am thinking of getting one with a clear trackball and backlighting it with a/some RGB LEDs. Do you think a clear would be OK or would it be too transparent and maybe be too bright?
I know these questions are mainly down to personal preference but I thought I would ask to help me decide.

With a Lexan overlay, you want the high lip trackball, not the high ball trackball.

Count me as a big fan of the high ball trackball.
I thought about the clear ball also, but I ended up ordering mine with the blue translucent one. If you do order the clear one, I'd really be interested in your results with the LEDs -- it might make me order a replacement ball for mine.

If you are adding 1/8 th perspex/lexan then the high lip is v nice :)

Yes. The higher lip is designed to extend up through lexan; it comes with a spacer if you are not using lexan.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but if the high lip is only for situations where you add lexan on top of a cp, then why would you ever buy the high lip over the standard if you weren't using lexan on top?

No, other than having the flexibility to add lexan later.
The Golden Tee, aka high lip, TB is on sale more often, for one.
Another is even more flexiblity. Examples:
- mounting plate, 1/32" thick laminate, & four 3/32" thick plastic washers (no plexi/lexan, washers replace supplied spacer)
- 1/8" thick metal CP & four 1/16" plastic washers (instead of mounting plate + supplied spacer, no plexi)
[shrug] IMO, the first is reason enough. Especially since the only differences between the two are the spacer and the top half of the case, and you can buy the top half of the case by itself (with the total of an on sale HL TB + top half costs less than the normal TB) if you really want to for some reason.

When the High-Lip is on sale, it's a no brainer. You don't even have to buy the top case half from the standard ball, you can just sand/cut the lip off. It's just soft plastic.
As for the High Ball, I always thought I'd like one- more ball above the panel seems like it should be a good thing. Then I finally saw one installed on a game. Not only did it look wrong to my eye, but I did not like the feel of it. My hand would actually slip down the side of the ball to the panel, and get stuck there, instead of skating back and forth over the top of the ball like it does on a normal one. I suppose I could get used to it, but I don't think I will.

As you can see in this pic, below, the Hip Lip case top has a taller lip, due to a shorter case body. But the top their lips are the same height:

The spacer that comes with the "High Lip" TB is used to make the Hip Lip act like a normal TB (height of top of case body of normal = height of case body of high lip + spacer). Doing as you discribe would result in a "only-a-little-higher ball" (but not even close to the real "High Ball"). ;)

I don't like the High Ball because it's too high, also. Pretty much same reasons, but I'd describe my use differently (I was going to say I use it very differently, but after compairing yours and mine, they're actually basically the same).
