Title: I need a degaussing coil
Post by: monkeybomb on July 02, 2005, 06:03:21 pm
Where can I buy one cheap?  This is for home use.  I don't want to make one.

Thanks

Is this acceptable:

Or these

I guess my real question is why should I pick one over the other.  It will rarely get used and I can store it safely.  So as long as it works I'll be fine right?

You can usually get these at radioshack or you can make one yourself

I built one without an old CRT. Build at your own risk.

Take a large amount of speaker wire and coil it around a round tupperware container. Connect the two ends to the outputs of a doorbell transformer. Wire the doorbell transformer to a standard electrical plug and plug into a standard wall outlet.

I got mine at MCMinone.com

(I'd provide a link, but their site search is broken tonight)

They have two versions: one for 19" and smaller, and one for CRTs greater than 19". I got the bigger one. Not bad prices, although the bigger one is about $30.

Nothing like doing the "degausser dance" for feeling a bit silly, but it sure does work miracles on arcade monitors! (and no, I won't be videotaping myself doing it!)

Just build it yourself. The chance of electrocution is minimal

Just build it yourself. The chance of electrocution is minimal

but for $30 you can make that chance zero.

Thanks guys

I went ahead and bought the one Kevin suggested.  I know this is a DIY forum, but I like to buy stuff and it's really not very much money.
