Title: MDF paint process?
Post by: tkuper05 on June 29, 2005, 01:33:39 am
Is there anything wrong with this paint process?

I will be painting 5/8 MDF.

Sounds good. Obviously, make sure the paint and primer are compatible, but other than that, no worries.

I thought mixing oil and water based paints was bad...   :(
I really don't know though... That would be my first inclination.

I think you can do latex on oil primer but not oil-based paint on latex primer....not sure though.

You can apply latex over oil, but not the other way around. Latex needs to "breathe" and oil doesn't - it dries harder.  Oil takes much longer to dry, just make sure it is completely dry before sanding\applying the next coat.

So what about latex paint over my oil primer then?

i used latex primer and latex paint which turned out brilliantly.  I used Zinser brand primer and a decent quality latex paint on top.  2 coats of primer and i think 4 coats of paint sanding between each, looks really good.  Oil makes life easy on MDF, but if you use a really good quality latex primer and put 2 coats, allowing each to dry properly, it should be fine.

I will definitely consider latex paint on latex primer.  I just don't want to use a water based primer.  Do you have any pics of your cabinet Krion?

I'm very ignorant with types of paint.  So, latex is water-based?  If so, I'm going to use oil-based primer and latex paint.  If latex primer isn't water-based then I'm gonna use latex on latex.

I've been reading some about using a sealer to make the end pieces look consistent to the flat, broad pieces due to the fact that the end pieces soak up a ton of primer/paint.  Anyone else do this?  I think I'm gonna go with latex primer/latex paint.  I don't care how long it takes to dry.

All the edges I ended up with were covered with t-molding. This was the two sides and the edges of the CP.
