Title: Hardest part about building your own cabinet??
Post by: javeryh on June 28, 2005, 06:39:02 pm
What do you think the hardest part of building your own cabinet is?

1.  Woodworking?
2.  Installation of buttons/joys/speakers/wiring, etc.?
3.  Computer set-up?
4.  Artwork design?
5.  Finishing (staining/sanding/sealing)?

For me it's going to be #3 - I've never done any kind of electrical work/wiring before and it makes me nervous...

My hardest was the first. I don't have good tools, though. I suck equally at finishing, too.

Holy crap I can't believe I forgot that one - it's definitely the hardest part... I can't get anything done because I only have the weekends and they are filled with "stuff that needs done around the house asap..."

Another vote for #7, getting time to work on it.  Not always the wife that eats up the time, but the time's definately the killer.

VERY TOUGH CHOICES !!!!!!

You mean I've got to put artwork on this thing?  Oh jeez, I thought I was done.   ;)

Luckily for me my wife was anxious to start playing some games so she let me put the other projects on hold for a month while I put my cabinet together.

when you're cutting the side panels, what is best way ?

Do one side first, then clamp it on 2nd board for cutting or clamp both boards and cut both sides at same time ?

I would say the hardest thing are the decisions! Just so many things to consider....

The wood working was a lot of work... but i enjoy that sort of thing... for me the hardest thing is the trackball cause i still don't have it working yet... joystick and buttons were time consuming but really easy....it's gonna be a bear to do my side art too.. but should be fun...

Do one side first, then clamp it on 2nd board for cutting or clamp both boards and cut both sides at same time ?

I'd cut one and get it perfect and then use a router and pattern cutting bit to make an exact copy or you can do what I did and get 1/4" plywood and make a pattern and se it to cut both sides.  The next time I make a cabinet I'll be ready to go!

MDF is actually better for templates than plywood for exactly that reason. (1/2" rather than 3/4", of course.)
