Title: theme ideas for my dedicated classics cab??
Post by: hulkster on June 24, 2005, 10:53:00 am
okay, so once i get my showcase cabinet stability issues resolved, its time to start my next cab!  woohoo!  i already have the shell and the controls, i just need to think of a design/artwork theme to it.  its going to be all classics that use 4 way joysticks only.  i havent determined if i want a spinner or not...there arent that many classic games that i like that use a spinner so i dont guess i would need one.  ANYWAY, two 4 way joysticks with 2 buttons each (sound good?)  and will only play classics like frogger, donkey kong, pac man, tapper, etc.

so what kind of theme for artwork should i go with (i know thats more of an artwork forum question, but this covers a lot of different topics) and what should i call this cab?  my showcase is called the Mamestrosity so i dont want to have anything with Mame in the name.

I've always liked tasteful collages of classic characters.

I always like cole slaw. You could have the first cab themed around shredded cabbage. ;D

I'm going to be building a classic cocktail soon. Rather than use classic characters, I'm coming up with some original classic/retro artwork and shapes. I found a website that has a whole bunch of ready-made vector graphics to get me a head start. I can point you in that direction if you proise yours won't look better than mine

well considering that i really have zero graphics design skills, giving me vector images would not be pretty.  they would copied and pasted and printed  ::)  im looking at different artwork websites for marquees, side art, and cp art.  still need a name though

Vector objects are easy to move around and re-position after they're already made. It's like moving pieces of construction paper around on a board. They're mostly just monochromatic shapes. Suit yourself, though.

Are you going to base a theme on a name or a name on a theme? That would really help.

hmmm...well its going to be a general classics cab...nothing super special really.  my showcase cab is original with custom artwork and name (thanks Pixelhugger!) so this one i dont really care if its super original or not.  ill probably just get some side art with classic characters on it, and the marquee and name will have some kind of name involing "classics" or "retro"...something in that area.

Do you have a cabinet in mind yet? We could help track down some cool sideart if we know what size you're thinking of.

i like some of those, but the collage side art has 90's characters on it.  mortal kombat, tmnt, etc.  this classics cab will be a true classics cab...classics are frogger, etc. not street figther.  i grew up with street fighter (im only 24) but i know a classic when i see one ;)

mamemarquees.com has some nice collages, but they are pricey.

There's a neat piece of sideart out there based originally off of the DKJ sideart, but with lots of extra characters. I'll try to track it down. I think you'll like it. That's actually what I was looking for but i couldn't find it.

I was looking for some classic sideart also and I found this site while I was searching. I am seriously thinking about adding this to my cabinet.

Looks like a decent collage.

this may not be up your alley, but I always seem to associate old style signs from companies such as Coca Cola or Pepsi or whatever to classics. How about the Coca Cola cade?

yeah i saw that earlier, and i think thats what i may go with.  i like the blue around it rather than the pink border.  if you look at the two youll see what im talking about.  the other thing to consider is that i have currently white t-molding going around the cab, which i could easily take off i guess, but its already on there, and i wondering if that would look like crap with that type of side art.  t-molding is cheap so getting some black or whatever color wouldnt be difficult, i was wondering what everybody thought about that.  ill probably end up going with that collage though...pretty sweet looking.  so i need a cool marquee to go with it with a good name, and some cp art.
