I bought Battlefield 2 today, and its on DVD, BUT my dvd player has crapped the bed..
soooo.
would it be possible to either:
A: FTP to my XBOX and copy the contents of the DVD to my local PC drive and install it from there?
B: remove the DVD rom from the xbox and temporarily install it in my PC ? it is just a standard DVD rom right?
thoughts ideas, suggestions...

The Xbox DVD-ROM isn't a standard DVD rom, I don't think. I don't believe you use it in your PC. But this is going to be an ongoing problem for you so maybe you should consider picking up a new one. Here's one at Newegg for $21.

Or for $9 more it will read DVDs and burn CDs .

Excellent DVD burners can be had for about $50.

i thought that other than the proprietary molex cable that it was just a run of the mill dvd rom..
-
A. Might work... Dunno realy though. Why don't you just give it a try?
Load up to your dashboard, insert the disk and check your D: drive on your FTP program of choice. If you see the files then all you have to do is make an image from the files and mount that image in an imagedrive.

I don't think so, because I have seen tutorials to use a PC DVD-ROM in an Xbox and there are a bunch of hoops you have to jump through. If you just replace the Xbox DVD-ROM with a PC DVD-ROM on an unmodded Xbox I'm almost sure that it will not work.
Edit: Here's a website with some info: http://www.command-tab.com/index.php/dvd-rom-modded-xbox/
Quote: ...only the original Xbox DVD-ROM (3 models) or a modified Samsung 616-T can read retail off-the-shelf Xbox games.
So, there are definitely some differences. A regular DVD-ROM won't play original Xbox discs when hooked up to a modded Xbox. However, I didn't see anything that said it went the other way. So maybe an Xbox will read PC DVDs when hooked up to a PC. I have my doubts, though. I say that this isn't the last DVD you're going to want to use on your PC. I'd get a new one.

An XBOX DVD Rom will NOT work in a PC. It's been tried a bunch of times with no results. I'm not going to try and point out any threads or discussions about it so you're just going to have to take my word for it.
P.S. I've been a member of Xbox-Scene since early December and have read a butload of posts, I'm not just pulling shyte out of my arse...

oh ffs
go buy a damn DVD drive..
you can afford a 50$ game but not a 20$ dvd drive?
and no, it wouldnt work, you NEED the disk in the drive.. the new copy protection is funky, and with punkbuster being around if you crack it, youll be getting yourself banned rather quickly..

i spent 500.00 for my sony dru500AX drive when it was new, so no im not eager to spend another cent for a DVD drive.
luckily i was able to borrow a friends drive. but it was an interesting proposition nonetheless

um.. again.. you spent 50 on a game.. a Dual layer burner is 40 bucks now.. a reader is 20ish.. its sad to think you spent that much on a game, and cant just go pick up a cheap drive..
-
I kind of agree. It's almost a crime these days to own a PC but not a DVD burner. If you're impoverished, that's one thing, but If you are buying a videogame before it hits the bargain bin you should really invest in one of these babies. They're cheap and will be useful long after you are board with Battlefield 2.

there is a dvd burner for $50.00 shiped
on buy sell trade right now ;)
not mine but I am thinking of it being mine 8)
-
Yeah but it isn't dual layer. You can get a Pioneer or Sony Dual Layer burner from newegg for around $50 dollars shipped.
-
$50 for a DVD burner that won't burn dual layer is a rip off. Not only can you get a DL burner for $50 at Newegg, you can get a very high quality name brand 16x dual layer that will burn to +R or -R media for that price.
-
Dual layer doesnt interest me in the slightest - poor media compatibility, no way to ensure the layer break happens in the right place of the movie when burning and the discs are over 20 times the price of a single layer.
Add to that the 2.4x burn speed all the ones I have seen till now have, and its a big flop. Always nice to have the DL support, but I an thinking that my burner (which is DL) will be worn out before the discs are a sensable price.

Go you.. some of us use them for archiving things..

I'm with you on that one. To get a good quality DL disk you'll be spending like $8, for about $1.50 I can have the same thing just on 2 disks instead of 1! I do have a DL burner by the way... There's a couple XBOX games I wouldn't mind putting on a DL disk when they get below maybe the $4 mark or so. 'Till then, I'll back them up over 2 disks and just play from the HD!
-
Uhm, DL disks have allready gone down to about $4 dollars apiece.
-
From what I've seen you have to spend about $100 to get them at $4 apiece. By Christmas time they'll be down to $1 I hope. Personally I have never even used a DL disk. Too expensive. But that wasn't my point. My point is that paying $50 for a single layer burner, that is probably slower too and probably only supports + or - but not both, is dumb when you can get a much better drive, brand new, for the same price. Whether you're going to use DL or not, and you will as soon as the price of media comes down a bit further, is practically irrelevant to the fact that $50 for that drive is a ripoff.
Considering that a year ago D/L discs were $25 apiece I think we will be using them sooner than some of you think.
-
I wont be using them till they have at least 8 speed discs out. I only use the dvd-r for backing up the PC, and swapping files with friends. Both operations are either well under 4.7 gigs (swapping a few movies etc) or else well over (30 discs for a back up) - while the DL discs would reduce that to 16-17 discs, it would take almost 4 times longer, 4 times longer the PC is out of action and I have to sit there swapping discs. Also, it would cost a lot more.
