Just wondering if anyone here has used Maximus Arcade (http://www.maximusarcade.com/). It looks to be a pretty decent looking FE.
Screen shots look nice

It is a shareware, and the downloadable version run only 30 days. (what i read on their web site). It costs 20$.
I don't see any feature what other Front end couldn't do for free.
-
It DOES have some use.. If you like how it looks, you make a few screen shots then throw it in any of the free frontends that have skin support.
It takes about 10 minutes to copy most frontends look / feel.... And with this one... you have 30 days!

Dirty dirty dirty...
But if they're the only paid product in a sea of freebies, they ought to expect not to be making any money. I hope they didn't sepnd too much time on it hoping to turn a profit.

I do like the bright colors, but it doesn't appear to do much that any other couldn't do.
-
I tried it.
never got it working ???
-
At least if something goes wrong with the free ones you could say you got your money's worth.
-
Yeah I'm not about to shell out the $20 either because I'm perfectly happy with Mamewah but honestly is $20 really that bad considering what we end up paying for other things in this hobby?
-
I acctually cracked the security on it, but I still don't use it. 8)

No, $20 is not bad for a far superior product, but can anyone say that Maximus thinger is superioir? Besides, it's hard to argue with free - especially when the free stuff might even be able to do more.
-
IIRC it was originally ~$80, wasn't it?
-
I just tried it and it is no different than the other FE's on the block. It is easier to setup, but you can only have your favorites listed and not actually setup favorite categories like Mamewah.
I really like Mamewah, but there is no manual. The help files are marginal and I still don't know what a lot of settings are.
The only thing that should be added to Mamewah is a better manual and this would be one of the best FE's on the market and I would probably pay for it, but it's current state, I don't think I am using 1/2 of what it can do since I can't quite figure it out and I think I know a few things about computers.

its "bleh".. ive seen other FREE ones that are nicer.. o_O
actually atomic is as nice.. tho i took a big performance hit on atomic.. but still.. its "NICER"
-
i took a big performance hit on atomic..
If you use layout (skin) including all features (Animations, video, Alpha blending, multilayer , mp3..) , you can have performance problem on average computer. But i don't think you hit performance probleme with a relativly simple layout.

just basic install with sounds off.. went from 55 solid fps in MK3 to 15
dunno what the deal is, but yeah, destroyed my performance..

You talk about MAME performance. I thougth it was the front end.
I don't think the problem is directly linked to Atomic. Should be a mame configuration. or may be a memory issue. As The FE stays in Memory (but sleep) when mame run.. if you have not enough physical memory XP will swap , and you performance will decrease drastically.

Strange... ??? i tested with MK3 , i don't have performance issue.

that's odd, I would think that's enough memory (I was expecting you to say 128 mb :-p ). You might want to open task manager while Atomic is running to see how much it's using. If it doesn't seem that the memory is your problem after all it might be a good idea to reinstall the FE.

It won' t change anything to re-install the FE. Atomic is very light in term of installation requirement. the FEengine itself is just a .EXE of about 500k and on XP it requires no more additionnal installation. It uses what is in standard in XP distribution. You don't need to pre-install Direct X for exemple , because i use Direct X 7 which is provided as standard.
Do you have an Antivirus or something like that? You should list process which are running when Atomic runs. or with Task Manager check Physical memory available , may be you have other "sleeping" process which consume your memory.
I did my test with only 256 mega. So 384 should be enough.

I tried, and did not liked :P, Not as easy as they say to set up, and not very flexible.
As Youki said, it does not do anything that any other free FE would not do, in fact it does not offer as many options as other do..... so besides that nice looking skin, i think you could do WAY BETTER with other FE's 8)
