I am experiencing pretty poor performance when running this on my arcade mame machine.
I have a pent. 667 512 ram and a voodoo 3000 vid card
I have tried the tweaks of skipping frames and turning the settings down to try to get it to run smoothly to no avail.
I was wondering what would be a puta spec that it does run smooth. Preferably from ppl that do have a puta that is under 1gig ???? Please dont repy with.... "it runs fine on my P4 3.0 as it does run fine on my Athlon 2400. but that isnt in the cab.
Does it run smooth with an 800 or something similar, or is solely on the vid card?

its nothing to do with the video card, it will run fine around the 2-3ghz mark in current builds, maybe around 1.5 in older builds with more hacks.
not the answer you wanted? well it IS the answer.

So those tweaks don't work at all and it's simply not enough computer?

thanx
so a 1.5 might run nba
reason why i said that, is that i dont want to go out and buy another new system for the cab, so if i found out roughly what the minimum spec would be to run it, i could quite easily buy that cheaper 2nd hand. :)

With MAME .56 it runs full speed on my AMD XP1800. 8)

I love NBA JAM as well, and my old PIII-500MHz setup just didn't cut it. Too slow to really play. So I sold my cabinet, and I am doing a full rebuild with a new PC. (AMD 2900+ so it runs great... I know, not helpful.)
Anyway, the guy I sold it to wanted to play more games (not sure if he is a NBA JAM fan), so he dropped in a PC he had laying around. It was just a Celeron 1.4GHz, and he has 512MB RAM (not sure of speed). He tells me that NBA JAM works "just fine" on that setup. I haven't seen it myself to see if it is 100% up to full speed, but he claims that it is good enough to play.
Hope that helps.

Just 15 seconds ago I tested an AMD Duron 1600 and it played NBA Jam full speed without a hiccup.
$AU 35 for a socket-A board, $AU 60 for 512MB DDR400 RAM and $AU 65 for the 1600MHz Duron CPU.
That's $AU 160 (roughly US$125 today according to xe.com) for a complete upgrade. That's a fraction of what most people spend on a cabinet, or even a good night out.

My old computer had a 1.4ghz AMD Athlon (actual 1.4 ghz, before they moved to the "XP" naming scheme), 256 mb of ram, and a mid-range motherboard. I believe MAME was around version .6-.7 at the time. I could run NBA Jam, Hangtime, and Ultimate Hangtime at 100% easily. Occasionally, the sound would get a little scratchy which might have indicated a need for more power. At the time, the only game that I couldn't run well was Killer Instinct (and of course Cruisin' USA, et. al).
