Title: What size T-molding?
Post by: nickbuol on June 19, 2005, 03:21:19 pm
I am looking at 5/8 with laminate on one side and "backerboard" on the other.  These are to me professionally applied and cut on a CNC machine at a local millworks.  I've never seen backerboard, so I am not sure what to do.

T-Molding comes, obviously, in 5/8" and 3/4" widths.  I was thinking 3/4", but was hoping for some confirmation.

I should also use a 1/6" slot cutter, right?

I don't know about the thickness of the backerboard, but for the slot you want a 1/16" slot cutter.

I used 3/4 MDF and formica on one side. I used 13/16 t-molding, black; pretty much all you can get in that size, and that size was perfect. 1/16 router bit cut, make sure its in the middle taking into account the formica on the one side, so on the mdf it will be slightly off center...

Hmmm, 3/4" would be 12/16 and you used 13/16 and it was perfect. That gives me pause cause I have 1/16" laminate on one side and nothing on the other on 5/8" MDF and I wondered what size. I have 5/8" in hand, but I wonder if I should go 3/4"

5/8" = 10/16"

10/16" + 1/16" = 11/16"

3/4" = 12/16"

11/16" does not = 12/16"

Use 11/16" T-Molding...

I understand the ideal size is 11/16, but my hope is that 3/4 will work as well. It's only because the black-chrome-black t-molding I have looks so much cooler in 3/4"  The chrome strip is thicker. I have plenty of 5/8" I'm just deciding whether I want to go bigger then exacto off.

If you get your t-molding exactly on center, then you are talking only 1/32" 'extra' on each 'side' of where you are putting the t-molding.  I wouldn't try to exacto it off.  It will be difficult to cut exactly perfect, and that would be noticable in chrome.  So a little 1/23" overhang, so to speak, probably isn't going to be noticed by anyone but yourself.
