Short answer: yes.

Better answer:  Yes, but only if you use an older version of MAME.  Something like .36 would probably be good.  You're right about on the edge spec-wise on where .36 and .55 work out really well, so I'm sure you'll be able to run most .36 games on it.

If not, there is always Vantage.

It's not too hard to figure out how to use DOS MAME.

You can also put a front-end like mamewah between you and DOS. I'd put Win98-SE on that PII, run an older MAME and see how it does. I ran a PI for a while and was relatively happy. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Have you looked at the MameWAH help files? It's actually very easy to set up.

Mame 32 will work fine.
I have Mame 32 ver 56 in a smaller PC than that.

If you want a simple cab . just toss in Mame 32 ver 32 to 56 and load up some 80's games and have fun.

I do not mind the windows feel.  Dos might be EZ for others but getting sound drivers is not fun to me. I had 1 set up going on dos and my kids hated it.
Kids now adays are used to windows

MameWAH doesn't use a lot of resources, so I don't see why not. Download it and try it!
