Title: DOSCab - which DOS
Post by: GadgetGeek on June 17, 2005, 10:12:44 am
I'm hoping to get an old machine up and running over the weekend.  What versions of DOS have DOSCab users had the best luck with?  IIRC, I can find discs for DOS 6.22, DOS 7 (aka W98), and FreeDOS.

I've had good luck with Dos 7.1 (from the Win98 boot disk).

It should theoretically run on any version of DOS wth an extended memory driver, a sound driver and a VESA driver (or VESA support on the video card).  All my testing has been using Windows 98's DOS.

I found the DOS that came with Windows 98 to be the easiest with modern hard disks, long file names, compatibility with old DOS games etc

If you want it stripped of Windows (which is a good thing) you'll need a custom msdos.sys though, I can post this when I get home.
