Title: What games use 4 seperate player controls?
Post by: ITrek on December 12, 2002, 11:09:26 am
Anyone with 4 player cabs: what games do you play that actually used all 4 controls (joysticks or trackballs)?

I know I should be putting this in a new subject, but I think it's a part two to ITrek's question.

I want to build a cabinet, and I want four people to be able to play, but four joysticks a trackball and all those extra buttons, are going to make the cabinet look bulky, and crowd the people that are playing the majority of one and two player games.

I was thinking of making the actual cabinet two player, with one track ball, but I would like to be able to use Sega Genesis controls for the 3rd and 4th player, this way the controls will be out the way.  I would like to go with the Sega controls for two reasons, first it has three buttons and the start and select could be used for the coin and player buttons, also Atari 2600 controllers use the same input, so I can get real retro.

I've opened up my Sega, and there are no wires everything is just soldered.  Where can I go to get info on how to 'cleanly' hack into these controls?

Thanks

if i remember correctly, the original genesis controller didn't have a select button...just Start and ABC.

Your right, I'll have to add their coin buttons on the cabinet.

I used Hacked Sidewinder gamepads (the gameport version) for my controls.  The great thing about this is that I hacked two of them for the two players worth of controls on my control panel, and I have 2 more connected that two more people can hold in their hands and stand and play games.  It is a great way to make it 4 player without taking up all the extra room.  Especially for me, as 4 players at once is kinda rare at my place.

How about quartet! I just played it yesterday for the first time.. (the arcade version)

I extensively enjoyed the Sega master system version when it came out years ago.. it was only two player.. but it was great fun... i've never beat the game though... it was very tough towards the end!

Both of the D&D games has 4 players with 4 buttons each (5 each in Shadow over Mystara, the second one).

The D&D games are great for home play cause they go for hours, have branching paths and great replay value.

Also, smash TV and total carnage need 2 sticks per player, these are also good games to play at home on your mame machine, they were designed to cost about 20 bucks to beat :-) You'll probably only want to play them once tho.

As the others have said, Gauntlet(s), TMNT(s), simpsons, Xmen (up to 6 players), NBA Jam series.

Of course this relies on the fact that
a) you have 3 friends
and
b) they can all agree on what to play (you may not remain friends for long...)
