After my cpu fan dies, which it just has. how long does it take for the chip to overheat? i'm thinking I should turn it off real soon.

I just love the fact that you realized your heatsink fan died... and you thought it most important to tell us here on BYOAC before even shutting off the system LOL

Hey my video card fan was making so much noise it was ridiculous. I got a small screwdriver and dipped it in 2-stroke oil to just form a bead of lube on the end of the screwdriver. I then put the droplet as close as possible to the bearing and wiped away the excess.

It stopped the noise and I haven't heard it since! That was about 6 months ago.

Well.. if its Intel P4, just go into your bios and make sure the thermal throttling is on.. and youll be fine until you replace it.. just dont go hardcore and start doing crazy CPU heavy stuff..

and honestly, it should be "ok" to surf the web with assuming you have a case fan or 3..

Also, if your really worried, grab a 80mm case fan, and zip tie it to the heatsink.. ^_^

If you take a box fan, open up your PC and put it in front blowing in, you can buy yourself some time.

I had an Athlon board that one of the little plastic tabs that the fan/heatsink clips to snapped off.  The motherboard had an automatic shutoff feature that would shut it down if the CPU fan dropped below a certain RPM.  But since the fan kept spinning at full speed, but was just dangling inside the computer, not attached to the CPU, it melted the core.  If anyone wonders what that actually looks like I think I've still got the processor at work.

Speaking of Peale's box fan idea - anyone seen the PC "mod" where they actually did that and sent/posted it somewhere?  It had all the other stuff working regular-like, but they just removed one side of the case and screwed a box fan on there that happened to be the same size!  It was a goof on all the "lower your temps with water-cooling" things fast becoming the rage.

yes, that was a laugh. and in my desperation with my PC i was willing to give that a shot! most of those fans are cheaper than PC fans anyway (",).
hard to find that pic nowadays  :( . anyone got it? i remember some keywords to it were redneck and florida...
