When looking for ideas for my four player panel I ran into one who said he wished he had only used four buttons instead of six for 3 & 4 because they were not supported or used in any games? Is this correct?
-
IIRC, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter BOTH have >4 buttons.
I am willing to bet your "friend" is setting up an iPac card, right?
(With buttons 5 and 6 for P2 on an iPac card, you must MANUALLY ADD them.)
Sorry, I don't remember how to do this...

Thetered - Generally you are correct. Only the Dungeons & Dragons games in MAME use 4 buttons, but a lot of games use 3. No arcade games use more than 4.
You might want more than 4 for console emulation, but you would be better not adding these to the cab, or using gamepads, IMHO.

actually...... the ipac has those buttons defiend, it's mame that doesn't give them an input by default.
Don't listen to the others, your assumption is corrrect. Even on game consoles, 4 player games (that you can actually play on your cab) don't need more than 4 buttons.

I waa actually going to go with 7 buttons for all 3 players on my CP. I ran across this topic in the past and know that 4 buttons is about the max for players 3 and 4, but I like the uniform look of all players having the same buttons. Function vs. asthetics for me. I doubt I will ever do console emulation, so they really are a "waste" but I will be using the IPAC-4 and buttons are cheap. With a 48" wide CP, I have pleanty of space for another couple of buttons for each player. I know others would argue that they like as "empty" or "clean" of a CP as possible.
To each his own I guess.

???
what do you mean?
-
He means that console emulation is better with gamepads as opposed to arcade controls, so you might want to consider no more than 4 buttons for P3 and P4. :)

I'm using an old Gauntlet cab so my panel will be a little cramped so anything i can do to free up space here and there would be great, but I understand where you are coming from!

I've seen those controllers for sale before before, but that's a good link.
