Just installed a subwoofer in my cabinet. Mainly for modern PC games like Need For Speed Underground etc but tested it with some old mame games as well.
Most arcade games only use high-pitch sounds but asteroids is a completly new experience to play.
Any tips on other mame games where a subwoofer makes the game more fun to play?

Most games that had subs are going to be from the 77-80 era. After that they started cranking the games out cheap and they kept that up basically forever.
Another game that originally had a big sub in it was Sega Turbo.
Space War/s did not have a sub, but it does have a lot of low pitched sound.

I was surprised to find this out as well when I cracked open my MKII cab and found the sound system was composed of a 4-inch speaker and small 2-inch speaker. Presumably one was the woofer and one was the tweeter.
Although you can't really blame the cab makers as arcades were so loud you could barely make out the sounds of one game over the rest. No need for high-fidelity sound if no one can make it out.

BUP, bup, BUP, bup, BUP, bup.
It still gives me the willies. Space Invaders!

TOK beat me to the punch. I just got done playing Space Invaders and was going to add it to this list. Asteriods also sounds great with the bass cranked.
This is fun. I must look for more.

Try gyruss. Shoot one shot.. then wait and see how as it goes deeper, so does the bass effect. I did this with a bass shaker, but not sure if will work with a sub only.
However.. I recomend getting a "bass shaker" instead. Youd feel a lot more, and at lower volume and power.

Sprint 2 also has some massive stereo speakers in it as well.

Not too off topic i hope but, i love arcade sounds so much.
On my phone i have as the ringtone, the tune from Discs of Tron that plays when you win the first round. I'm planning a full size Discs of Tron Environmental for my game room, you better believe that will have subs in it! ;D
Voodoo Ray.

Many subs are poor in making strong vibrational effect. Also, to get the most vibration from them, you need to move a lot of air - so the enclosure must be semi-airtight.. and the voume level must be sick loud. Even with all that.. you still will not feel as much vibration as with a bass shaker.
Bass Shakers work on the concept that low bass is mostly felt and not heard. Its basically a sub without the air movment. Instead, it moves a weight inside it, and the vibrations are transfered right into the thing you mount it too. Even at very low volume, you will feel everything.
There are 2 versions available still from parts express. I have the low power versions, and when i mounted 2 under my pc chair - at maximum power, i could barely see my monitor cause the vibrations were screwing with my eyes! (pictures was all over the place) However, a thicker wood may need the more powerfull Pro version. Pro specs:
Specifications: *Power handling: 50 watts RMS/75 watts max. *Impedance: 4 ohms *Usable Frequency Response: 20 to 100 Hz *Fs: 40 Hz *Force Peak: 30 lbs. per ft. *Dimensions: 6" dia. x 2-1/8" H *Net weight: 4 lbs. each.
30lbs of force per foot generation is pretty damn sick! :)

You should use a small amp to give them extra power, and a crossover to limit the high frequencies. While these can play higher frequencies, that will limit the more powerfull shake ability.
ohh, and heres a BYO transducer page I found:
http://www.sdinfo.com/volume_4_2/tactile.html
Look up bass shakers, and you will find many reviews, as well as pages on people who use them in everything from Home Theater, to gaming chairs, and much more.
There are other transducers out there - but they cost a lot more too.

Space Duel.
Better transducers can be had at that price.

Well, instead of being a smart --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- know it all.. maybe you would be so nice as to link to them?!
-
No. I don't consider my remark smart ass, if it were I would have included some sarcasm.
You have access to sites like Google, ePinions, and a hundred other product review sites. Use them.

I see the Retroblast and Tasered Woman threads have everyone grumpy today...

It's monday, that's what happens.
You forgot to account for the "I'm quitting smoking" thread.

Killer Instinct had a pretty bitchin' sound system if I remember correctly. If you have a decent computer you might want to fire that one up.

---smurf-poo---. You wont find any bass shaker transducers for lower. Ulness you are taking them out of some used toy like the Aura game vest - and those are made by the same company that makes these bass shakers.. and are not as powerfull.
The bass shakers never caught on then... so they were sold at super low cost to places like parts express. They are no longer being produced. However, they have become popular now, because of home theater projects and gaming ventures.
If you look at any 'new' transducers, you will see they are all very expensive. The buttkicker cost arround 300$ for a single unit if memory serves me correct. Not including the major expensive amp needed to push it.
Your post was basically an attack on a person trying to help another. To make yourself look like you know something. And really, you do not.
Go away and do something usefull. I doubt theres more than 3 people here that actually like you... or care what you have to say.

Mario Bros has some low tones, Donkey Kong Jr, heh, I guess alot of those Nintendo's sounded pretty decent in that time frame.
Roc N'Rope
Smash TV (all the explosions with the bosses)
Robotron(sounds great with a sub)
Moon Patrol(who doesnt love the background music?)
Congo Bongo
list is too long to go on.............but you get the idea
