Title: PDA (Pocket PC) Emulation? Real Answer?? (Can Handle Playstation!?) MAME?
Post by: Otraotaku on June 12, 2005, 12:00:30 am
Ive been waiting while for a Pocket PC to come out good enough for me to buy that can Support Mame, mainly to play the Street Fighter games traditional 6 buttons...

I know some of you have seen me post this numerous times with a page long enough to have answered but still no Comfirmed answer...
I know nothing about A pocket PC, Or even know if its compatable with current Windows emulators or PDA specific... I just always wanted a PDA, only if I could... well... play my SF games on...

So my question is,What should I buy? what software should I use? and How much will it cost?  Please answer my question as simple as possible, Pocket PC nerds here at BYOAC  ^.<

If you are only looking to play the SF series, then I'm wondering what Pocket PC platform has the requisite 6 buttons? Even if the processors can handle it, playability is key. Anyone know of a handheld with 6 buttons? Mine has 5, 2 on either side of the d-pad, and one on the side of the unit. I havent played mame on is for a long while now, but if i recal correctly, some of the buttons are dedicated to mame functions, as opposed to being available for the emulated rom.

mamece supports the .36 rom set.  If those games weren't working or supported in that romset, no luck for you.

some pdas have attachable keyboards like the ipaq that are known as thumbboards.

That being said, there aren't too many models that you can't buy an attachable external keyboard for that folds up when you're not using it.

I have a palm, not a CE/pocketPC device so I can't help you out much as far as that goes, but when I did own my Ipaq, the external keyboard worked nice.

pda's are too slow for cps2 level games in mame, period.  Now if you an find a pda port of winkawaks then maybe, but I doubt it.

besides.... pdas are 500+ bucks and virtually useless (your average cell phone can replace the pda) while a psp is only 300, and supports various emulators including mame, with enough processing power to play the cps2 level games.

Final word.... pda's totally suck.  They always will and always have.  The functionality isn't enought to justify the price.

If you are interested in portable maming then a psp is the most promisng avenue at this point.  And you can take that the bank considering I HATE sony and would never suggest one of their products unless it's the only way.

You might consider going with the build your own approach.

before I purchased a jukebox, my plan for my via epia board was this.

via epia 800mhz board (or the new smaller faster one if I could find the extra 100+ to add) $100-300

car 12v dc-dc power supply $30 - $80 (depending on if you want it to be able to keep the machine up on a start... but not needed here)

12v DVD rechargable batteries $60 or 70 or so... have to recheck

TV lcd - $100 - $200 depending.... I have one though

Then an 500mg smartcard and a smartcard -> ide connector... Might be better way to do this... but I like it since you could place it to be swappable.

there, portable machine that just needs a box...

I was thinking of buying a broken one of these for the shell...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62054&item=8197775571&rd=1

There you go...

for about 400-500 you have a portable full PC that can fully run mame... maybe not the best for the latest builds... but good enough for older mame versions and maybe a few other emulators to help out on a few games (finalburn maybe... zinc would problably just wave a finger at you saying you know better)

yeah but id rather have a non-Sony portable emulating machine that plays games, MP3's and can sort through Files in Windows... not some  non-filing PSP that emulates with 1/2 or 1/4 the screen... and cant even use touch based for anything meaning no mouse... no keyboard... and is completly useless for what i need... I also LOVE to Draw and would be a even bigger plus to Actualy Doodle my scketchs on a Touch screen like on DS but can actualy save them....then not drawing anything at all on a PSP... I hate UMD's I love 1 GIG SD's.... and file sorting... PSP is just not my thing...

Guesss ill just have to emulate all the CPS2 ports on the Playstation Emulator they have for PPC.... HAHA Marvel Vs capcom, Super Puzzle Fighter And all the Street Fighter Games I can Shake a stylus at!

here i come... (Virtual buttons? YAY!)

No offense but to the majority of the population, the pda is dead.

Oh I have... many don't have the ram, some dont' have the processing power.  The few that might have a change of running them properly are too frikkin expensive for anyone with common sense to purchase.

No offense but to the majority of the population, the pda is dead.

Because of the 6-button thing, a pda can't play the gaems you requested anyway, unless you can find a full keybaord to hack that'll interface (mini pda keyboards don't have enough buffering memory to see more than a few presses at a time afaik.)

PDA's can already play playstation ISO's..VIA a Customizable set of Virtual Mapable  Buttons )[/i]... (varys between emulators)
GB-GBC-GBA Roms...  SNES-SMS-Gennisis roms... Some MAME*Cough*

Tell that the PDA is dead to all those people on the net... FPSE forums* IPAQ-Emu forums, and of course... Axim.com
There are more people out and about owning a PDA then the PSP, its common sense?

how many people do you see in a common place having either? close to none... Ive only seen 1 PSP in school, and 1 PSP on the streets, and it was in a resturant around its release... for all you know PSP is already dead?

while the last time Ive seen a PDA was in the last year...
The PDA population is alot bigger than you thinl? or even I! i thought I was going to be alone! but its up there considerably...

Heres a compare of the two I did, as far as SPECS goes...
You may be quite surprized...

PSP: $300.00+ tax
AXIM30: $300.00+ tax

PSP OS: sony UMD SD
AXIM30 OS: Windows Mobile 2003 SD

Main CPU on PSP: 333MHZ  and a 166MHZ graphics CPU
Main CPU on AXIM30: 624MHZ

RAM on Overall PSP: 8MB eDRAM 4MB VideoRAM
RAM on AXIM30: 64MB

PSP: 3D accelerated
AXIM30: (awaiting Directx mobile)

Screen Size:
Estimated Battery life on PSP: 3hrs or more
Estimated Battery life on AXIM30: 9hrs or more

Useable Buttons etc PSP: 8 buttons, Dialog analog
Useable Buttons etcAXIM30: 4-5 buttons Dialog + *Touch*

and has a considserably longer battery life by far using a 2000MAH...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion* Benifits of a PSP over a PDA    (In My Opinion)

You can play official games by sony and pay 100's of dollars for the few games that intrest you...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cons when Buying a PSP over a PDA

You also have to Be very Picky when Buying a PSP for use with emulation because the Newer ones are not hackable, and you  cannot Attempt to even use a Emulator on them...

You would have to get a japanese one to be safer... earlyer than 1.2 i hear and or buy one and replace the Firmware... Big hassle Because you would also have to worry about all the HUGE list of Defects on the first models...when you can get a PDA and start playing Imediatley...

Doesnt have a toouchscreen, forme that a big factor on a handheld because I love to Sketch,... and of coursethe Biggest Flaw... Not many Fully Working Emulators
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Benifits of Buying a PDA over a PSP*

Tons of Fully working emulators at your fingertips Right away! can hold/access Tons of Games + Songs with just a 1gig SD... Tons of Accessories to consider down the road... (like wireless keyboards)

longer battery life with the 2000MAH by Mugen...Definately Something new!,when you get bored of seeing the dame old handhelds around...

It all ends down to Which is the better Emulating machine on the go? Well I can now... can you decide?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cons with PDA over PSP*

Most Officaly released games are stale, corny or just plain SUCK!
You may encounter a Virus... (of course probability increases on the internet)
dialog isnt made for games...
Bluetooth greatly reduces battery,
If you dont adjust CPU it will Drain battery

Just FYI as soon as I saw how easy it was to map Buttons on the Touchscreen's interface using the PSone Emulator I was sold to my Dell AXIM30-PDA, oh and of course SNES roms... its Truly amazing!!! at the size of a Coke can how can you deny its POWER!

In the same vein as some of the other responses I don't see how SF would be playable on a PDA even if you could run it successfully. Its just too small and fiddly to lend itself to something as involved and frantic as a 6 button fighter.

In terms of emulation they are probably OK if you want to make a dedicated novelty micro cab playing something like Pac Man or Galaxian (I'm sure at least one person has documented this) but otherwise, it seems a lot of expense and effort for no return whatsoever.

Otraoku, try playing one game, not even a fighting game on a PDA and you'll immediately change your mind.  The fact of the matter is, they weren't made with gaming in mind.

Yes, most manufacturers have improved their controls so that you can get clear button press differentiation, but that doesn't mean the games are easily playable, and for that matter playable at full speed on multple different games.

I've got a palm, I can use palmmame to play games with it.  It's not easy, and while it's interesting at first, it quickly becomes tiresome simply because the controls are not as responsive as that of an arcade joystick and buttons.

It ain't the real thing, which is what 99% of the people in this forum are trying to achieve.

I'm going to have to agree with Howard on this one, sorry guys.

I too was like "WOW!! A PDA!!" and bought an axim X50, built in wireless, 520mhz, 64mb of RAM, etc.   I'll put games on it, I'll use it for e-mail, I'll use it for EVERYTHING!!!!

Well, the buttons on it (and all PDA's) are not meant for gaming.  The games were meant to pass time if I'm stuck somewhere or have a long wait, but it's very hard to play with the buttons.  Carrying around an attachment to play games takes up just more space, and if attached, makes it so it won't go in its holster, so I have to carry it or put it in a pocket, which totally sucks.

E-Mail?  Sure!! If you want to take 55 hours to write an e-mail by tapping on buttons?  A detachable keyboard?!  Great, that requires me to carry this thing in some kind of bag, or have another bulky thing in my pocket.  This also requires me to find a flat surface to put this on to type with, in which case I MIGHT AS WELL HAVE BROUGHT MY LAPTOP WITH ME.

There's not enough free widespread wireless internet access (where i live, I'm sure in NYC it'd be fine, but Branford, CT and the surrounding areas (including new haven) just don't cut it).  If wireless internet was widely available, having a 520mhz machine on your hip with a touch screen and a fully implemented web browser would be excellent, but that's just not the case.

Gaming on this thing is fun, sure, but it's WAY TOO EXPENSIVE to use it just for that.  That's why you can go get a PSP which can handle better graphics, and has many more games for it.  Plus with the homebrew crap going on for PSP, and everything being ported to it, it'll be MUCH better suited as an emulation platform.

Go with a PSP.  I wouldn't play too much with the PocketPC, unless you have a ton of money and don't care where it goes.

Just my $0.02

Havent had a problem with lag yet... ^.<
I think you guys are way too post impulsive... almost every counter you made on this topic can be acomplished on a PDA... and by the way... my PDA also has 7 plus buttons... ^.^ Cool *Control*, Skin Eh? yeah... hehe

I have an Ipaq 2210, which is a great tool. Particularly as I commute a lot on trains, and can use for everything from drafting notes and emails, to reading news items on avantGo and Egress RSS reader, watching video, and of course standard diary functions.

I also enjoy games, and there are native games, and fantastic emulators for things like NES, SNES, GBA, GBC, Sega consoles, etc (see www.pdarcade.com). The big issue I have is that using the PDA buttons, after 5 minutes, my fingers are numb, which limits their playability. I have looked for something to help without any luck. Ideally a mini bluetooth gamepad. If anyone can advise on something specific which works I would be most interested.

Ive had mine for a little less than a week and im already Obsessed with it... about the controls... I found it dificult at first... but my buttons may be a bit more spaced out than yours... I have been to  PDAarcade... in fact its in my bookmarks... ^.< thats where I  found my first PPC emulator....

MorpGear, I suggest that to you in terms of Controls.... Its great! I find myself using its Dialog for controls and virtual buttons for action and such... or vice versa, it gives it a great balance and usualy  pulls if off for any game...
oh,
and I almost forgot the best part... Downloadable and Customizable skins for the Virtual pad...  so that you are comfortable with the layout*

but other than that.... physicaly, I think the Ipaq has a atachable controller or something, non-wireless that i think would be nice... but i dont know what to telll ya man...
