The bf2 demo is out. Anyone here try it yet?
I am having control issues, the directions are sluggish.
And where do you restock a weapon?
I like the squad and command thing. Pretty cool to see a top down view of what is going on.
The vertical takeoff jet is pretty nifty.
-
Just got done downloading it personally. Gonna try it out in the morning. I hope its as good as I have led myself to believe it will be.
-
it's pretty good.
I figured out how to get more ammo. The support dude or one of the classes hands out supplies.
Or the commander has to air drop supplies.
-
Argh. My poor geforce 3 couldn't really handle it. Maybe it is time to upgrade...
-
BF2?
-
BF2?
I think it's BattleField2. Hopefully they don't mean Butt-F**kers2.

Its a good game. I'm getting some weird graphical glitches even after updating the drivers. I was riding topside of a tank and the screen went white. No gui or anything. I hit esc and nothing. Strange. Especially considering I am running it on a Geforce 6800GT OC and a AMD 64 3000 system with a gig of ram heh.
-
yeah, I am getting strange happenings too. I even switch keyboard, and switched to a ps/2 keyboard. still get lag in controls once and awhile.
-
Yup. I hope they patch it to heal it for the launch.
-
Yeah, I've got some issues too. Graphics are fine though, I think I have a GF FX5400 or something like that, not the greatest, but no glitches. The last time I had issues with BF was when I briefly switched to an ATI card. I could see though mountains! (kind of useful, but annoying really).
So far the game looks prety good.

I know I need more memory, but...
AMD 64 3200
512mem
ati 9550
USB keyboard and mouse into the keyboard's built in hub.
In my old computer I had power issues, the 200W power supply could not handle the two plugged into together like that. Haven't had problems so far with the new computer which has a 450w psu.
why would punk buster run in single player mode...

I've been playing it all weekend. I have kind of mixed feelings, considering I've been a hardcore Desert Combat (modern-warfare mod for BF1942) player for the last two years.
The infantry combat with the chain of command and VOIP is very well done. It really takes the infantry game to a whole new level. Unfortunately, infantry has never been the BF series strongest aspect. The rather ---smurfy--- netcode and hit detection really bring down a very strong implementation in my opinion.
BF has always been about the vehicles, and I think the BF2 demo really falls short in this regard. The tanks are cumbersome and glitchy with major collision / clipping issues. The planes are rendered almost worthless by the unbelievably short view distance and inaccurate missiles. Not including radar on the fighter jets was a major mistake in my opinion. The helicopters are pretty good, but I'm still getting used to the flight physics.
I'm a serious Desert Combat clan player and my specialty has always been the air-game. I'm very disappointed in how BF2 has setup air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. I'll still be buying this once it comes out to check out the other maps and maybe things will improve. It's still fun, but I'm not completely happy with it.

I was playing on the US side last night, and I some guy drove a tank in the water to our battleship and started killing everyone that was spawning below the deck. I assume that has to be a glitch.
System Specs
AMD 1800 XP
1 gig ram
ATI 9700 AIW
Probably going to update to a AMD 3000 XP before the game comes out.
-
I had no problems but didn't care for the game much.
AIW ATI9800Pro
Intel 3.2
2Gb RAM
Maybe just need to give it more time.....

I dunno, I think it's too early to say, but so far it has promise. That instant radar thingy the commander can drop is great. Too many times has a perfectly hidden sniper/spawn camper ruined a good game. Now you can drop a (whatever they're called) and pinpoint his position. It's great :)

Sir P
I believe the (lack of) Memory is your problem.
I've been a long-time Desert Combat player, and over time my system upgrades have made a noticeable difference in performance. I found that with BF1942 / Desert Combat, upgrading from 512 to 1 gig or ram was the single biggest boost for the game - faster load times, smoother graphics, Double plus good.
Playing the demo all weekend long, has made me realize that I am going to order a second GB of ram along with the full version of BF2, While I have had a few laggy moments here and there, I would say that BF2 is a huge improvement over BF1942 in the network department.
Overall, I am very pleased with the demo, and I was very worried that it was going to be a letdown ala Unreal Tournament 200X - where everything looks real purty, but the gameplay goes down the tubes.

It runs 24/7
and if you have bots running, bots use cpu cycles, so the combo of pb and those bots is prolly your issue..
Punkbuster is a ---stingray---. :-\
After thinking about it, it is probably my memory. I have several other games that installed punkbuster and never had a problem with them.

brand new system, only about a month and a half old.
I haven't had issues with q3a or ut2k4, or mohaa.

UT, Mohaa, problem dont exist..
Q3A tho, weird you havent had the PB lag...
well, beyond defragging, scandisk, and what not, i have no clue without looking at it in person..
Your lag in the controls dont happen to be while your on a boat does it?
-
no, it's anytime.
To be more specific. I took my headphone off (I play with surround sound headphones) when the contols were lagging the computer was beeping like crazy.
It's like a whole bunch of commands were queued up. It only happens when I hold a key down, like running forward. Then I start moving a different direction it lags before it starts responding.
-
I think my video card is overheating. When I play single player the game will stall every so often and the audio jumps. Then it releases and it acts like I have moved slightly from the spot I started. Also I have been getting some weird tears in polygons. Gotta get some better ventilation.
-
Is BF2 also called Battlefield: Modern Combat??
If so I was a beta tester for that on the PS2 a few months ago. It's very, very fun, even when I got sucked into a tree and couldn't get out.

Like I siad, I checked that already. My Use Sticky keys checkbox is not checked.
I've been watching a couple of forums. This issue has not come up with anyone else yet :(
So I suspect it is something with my setup.
-
I just tried Desert Combat. Cool. Loads a little slow. The helicopters are not natural, bf2 does a much better job.
-
I initially hated the demo and uninstalled it. Then I redownloaded it (Argh) to see what it would run like if I turned everything on high graphically. While I was performing this test, I became hooked. I am absolutely in love with this game now. If the rest of the maps are as tight as the demo, it'll be hands down my favorite online shooter ever.
Thought I had to always be anti-tank to defend against armor in bases, but 2 days ago I discovered the joys of C4 (And the much better gun that's included). Also just read a FAQ this morning that informed me the anti-tank class rocket was wire-guided and you could paint your target by staying locked on (Doh). Constantly marvelling at the utter brilliance of the map. BF2 could be the 1st game I ever join a clan on (Though I have no contacts there). DynaGod: Maybe I'll check you out. I may have the occasional brain-dead game, but I'm usually at the top of the leaderboard and understand the objective of BF games.

Is it an ATI card? I had similar problems with BF and it was an issue with the driver version for the card. I think the game is made in conjunction with nVidia or something, and I wonder if they don't mess with the ati owners??? I actually bought this current Geforce card to combat the problems I had in BF (the game is too good to just 'not play').
I -was- able to get rid of a lot of the issues I was having but reverting to an earlier version of the driver. Maybe that might help.
I have a Radeon 9800 with the absolute latest driver and haven't encountered any problems at all. I know ATI has had some issue with BF in the past, but this is a surprising good release.
It sounds like overheating (especially since the audio is also jumping. Onboard audio? I know I have a side panel fan specifically to hit my NForce2 southbridge chip).

They really have nothing in common. Same theme. But it's build for the consoles from scratch.
-
I just found that my side fan has gone dead on me. Hence the reason my Geforce 6800GT is overheating. :) So gonna replace tonight and try it again.
-
Yeah.. I just put it on.
It makes my P4 3GHz 512MB Ram system cry like a little baby.
I just ordered another 512MB Ram and even tho I have a
256mb video card, its a GEForce FX 5600 and I cant run it
any more than 800x600 w/LOW graphics for everything....
:(
wow.
Oh yeah.. how do you fly the friggin helcopters? hahah
I keep doing backflips w/them into the ocen..
-
the controls bug is a known issue. Keys will not remap as well(also known reported bugs). As for AmericanDemon seeing white across the top of the screen, the only time I have seen that is if you hit the "~" key(which opens the console) seeing as its just below the esc key, perhaps you hit it by mistake?
Demo is betaware, so of course its not polished. I personally do believe all hires textures are not incorporated into the demo as well to keep the size where it is. Forcing AA and AF to their highest settings still left jaggies. I am delaying my purchase for 2 or 3 days from the release date 6/22/05 until I read some feedback about said bugs/issues being addressed. Game On Fellas! ;)
-
Alright was gonna apply to DYNAGODs clan. But I dont feel skilled enough with military tactics to even attempt it. Anyone wanting to create a BYOAC clan?
-
I'll play with you guys. I don't really like clans though. But if I do I suggest I fly the chopter :) From what I can tell online people can't fly them well. To me it feels like flying a slow R/C chopter. It isn't that hard if you have the right control setup, just takes practice to get the hang of it.
I have found a neat trick on the 32 player map in multiplayer demo. Take the transport heli full of guys. Fly to the main enemy base, but just over the oil rig that is on fire. That way anyone manning the heat seeker missle thing won't be able to target you easily. Land on the silo. Everyone base jump off the silo. Or keep a sniper on the silo for cover.
the only thing I wish about the helis is i;d like to free look with my hat switch.
-
I picked up a Thrustmaster Afterburner 2 so I could fly. Well I got what I paid for. The recentering of the stick is terrible. When I hit the throttle, the chopper always tils right and back. So I flip the chopper on take off. With some work I can maneuver it ok. Far from what it should be though. I am thinking of picking up a Saitek X52 flight stick and throttle.
I am gonna start a new thread regarding recruiting BYOAC players. Get it ready for launch.
-
The X52 is pretty cool. I think I am going to get a used X45 as it still has most of the same feature, just no cool little LCD display thingy.
Thrustmasters are generally good, I had a Thrustmast FCS for the longest time. But the afterburners are so-so I hear.
You definately need a "4CH" setup like an R/C heli. To hover takes precise control of throttle, tail, and rotors.
Even with my cheapo gravis joystick with throttle control I can take the transport heli and land it on top of that apartment/hotel structure, the one next to the pool of that east flag location, in one fluid motion :) But using the hat switch to control tail is not that precise :(
Actually, the X45 and X52 have a nub on the throttle that can act as a mouse (like the laptop nubs that are between the G and H keys). Ii bet that would work perfectly for free look which would help when landing a heli.
BTW, if anyone is into flight combat let me know. I have M$ FC1, Falcon 4.0 (which I don;t like that much though), Battle over Brittain, Secret Weapons of Normandy, and several others. Flight combat is my favorite type of game.
-
I'd be into flying with you. I've always wanted to get into combat and flight games, but havent had the proper equipment. ;) Now I have tyo get it for BF2 so I may as well use it on others too. :)
