Title: Setting up MameWah to run in vertical mode.
Post by: lokki on June 09, 2005, 10:37:54 pm
Hi,
I apologize if this has been answered before but a quick search here and at mameword forums did not come up with an answer.

The FAQ says
Quote
Q: Can I setup MAMEWAH to run vertically?

A: Unfortunately MAMEWAH cannot rotate natively. BUT if you have a video card capable of hardware rotation (eg ATi Radeon), or if you have portrait software (eg PivotPro), then you can create a vertical layout - simply reverse the X and Y no. of pixels, eg 480x640.

I have a Radeon 7000 Video card that supports rotation.  But don't really understand the layout formats. Any instructinos on what needs to be done for this to work? Maybe instructions to convert standard layout to vertical.

Are there any vertical layouts out there for the current version of MAMEWAH. I found a couple of layouts at http://www.screenshotarchive.com/skins.htm But could not get them to work with Mamewah.

Thanks

Hi,

You should try my FrontEnd : AtomicFE , it can run vertically very easly (just choose "vertical" in a combobox and it will rotate all for you)

Hi,
I had tried your front end in the past. But at the time ( a few weeks ago) the layout manager was not fully working. And I quickly gave up on it.

I really like some of the features of your front end. But given the option would rather have MameWah.

searching the forum will definately answer your question...

However....in brief 'Captain Caveman' terms...ungabunga! ;)

As an example...  your current standard horz. screen resolution is 800x600.

You then rotate her on her side using hardware or software &....shazzam..your screen now becomes 600x800. (or in other terms..your screen ratio flips from 4:3 to 3:4)

Hence...your mamewah layout will reflect the same...ie the main.jpg image will be 600x800 ratio.

savy?   ;D

Hi,
I don't think it is quite that easy.
The layout has to be converted to vertical, and I do not know how to do this.
I do know how to perform the rotation on the video card.

It was fully working, but not user friendly!

Hi,
this was actually the information I was looking for
1) How to change an existing horizontal layout to vertical.
2) How to upgrade existing vertical layout (from stuzza's) to the new format.

Thanks

You will need an image editing application such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.

1) How to change an existing horizontal layout to vertical.
2) How to upgrade existing vertical layout (from stuzza's) to the new format.

1) Edit the layout (with the Layout Designer), and first change the dimensions (eg 600x800) in the Background > Size menu.  Next your photoshop skills will come into effect as you need to redesign the background graphic accordingly.  Finally move the objects around (again in the Layout Designer) so that the games list lines up with your new background graphic.

2) Read \mamewah\docs\layouts.txt - it should just be a simple case of renaming a few files.

Sounds foreboding...but if you read the documentation, it's quite accommodating!

I should keep this quote somewhere!  :D

What photoshop skills are required (beyond rotating images)?

Rotating is not enough, you need to redesign the whole image.  eg if you rotate a 800x600 image, it will be the correct dimensions (600x800) but the image will be on it's side.  Unless you want to stand with your head on its side then this is no good!  ;)

Look at MrSalty's examples here: http://www.screenshotarchive.com/skins.htm - note that the vertical one is a complete re-design, not just the horizontal one rotated.
