At 2:30 today, EST I have an interview with an arcade op.
He and I are on casual terms, but still, it's a job interview. What do I wear?
Oh yeah...this is actually on-topic for the main forum, as I'll be building...arcade controls!
Just not my own.
-
Button down shirt and kayaks.
Good Luck!!
-
Crap! I gotta go buy a boat!
(just ribbing on you, GGKoul!)

Isn't a kayak a boat? ;D
Is it a Candian version of khakis? ;D
Oh and good luck Peale

It used to be the general rule was to dress the way you would if you were working in the position, though I'm sure there are some exceptions...
You wouldn't go for an interview to work as a laborer, dressed in jeans, and work boots (though maybe you would)...
I guess what I'm saying is, if he's interviewing, he's probably considering other candidates...dress in a way that's professional, and ask what the dress code is during the interview...

The way I heard this spun was dress as nice as you'd dress for a day on the job without people asking if you had to leave for a funeral or a job interview somewhere else.
Good luck.
-
Dress as you would for the job but the nice version. If labour wear the jeans without the holes. Good luck and remember Any Op would be nuts not to hire you.
-
In Canada, a kayak can also refer to a small fish that is very like a herring.
Hm...I can wear a suit made out of little fish!

Actually, he asked *me* a couple years ago if I would like to work for him. I think I even posted in the EE forum about it. At the time I had to turn it down because I was a stay-at-home dad, and that was a major conflict.
Now that I'm looking for work, I called him up and asked if he needed any help. Two years ago his tech had just up and left, and he was left without. He now has a couple of guys, but can aparently still use some help.
We'll see. Khakis and dress shirt it is, I suppose!
-
I wear my "No Fat Chicks" t-shirt to every interview.
-
Maybe you're supposed to GO to the interview in the KAYAK. Is his office located on water frontage?
-
How many hours is it? I mean, really, unless the guy has a huge operation, how would he have 120 hours of repair work every week?

Cut down the tallest tree in the forest with... A KAYAK!
Ni!

I dunno. We'll talk more about this @ 2:30. Besides, there's not just repairs in that job. There's transport of games, conversions, fielding calls about new games, monetary collections...
-

I dunno.

If you get this job, I'll be expecting frequent posts in the "free" B/S/T thread. ;D
Ok maybe not, but that op should never have to throw much away with so many people here willing to take it.
-
I'd rather see him selling any castoff parts on his site to help support his family.
-
Regardless, I doubt anyone else is quite as qualified for that position. Peale should be a shoe in for that job.

As a lot of you know, I dumpster dive. I used to check out his dumpster at least once a week. Want to know what I found?
Nada. I think I found a piece of MDF once with some T-molding on it. That's it. I know he tosses at least three cabs a week (last I knew). Pretty sure he recycles a lot of parts into other cabs of his.
-
You could possibly save some cabs, at least.
-
How does he dress? If possible, try to match his style / level of formality for the interview. You don't want to show up in a button down shirt and khakis if he's wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I would probably go with clean jeans and a tucked in polo-style shirt.
-
Button down shirt and kayaks.
Good Luck!!
God Damm Spell Chq.
-
So how'd it go? ;)
-
I'd say pretty good. I showed up in a dress shirt and khakis, he showed up in a t-shirt and denim shorts. We shot the breeze for an hour, I got changed into something more comfortable, and started troubleshooting pinball machines. I have to be back tomorrow @ 10:30.
-
Did he by any chance ask you if you owned a kayak?
-
Thats good to hear man. That seems like a job that you will deeply enjoy.

I think you meant to say "aboot". :D
Good to hear you didn't take GG's advice - I think he'd have looked a little differently at you if you'd have shown up draggin' in a boat! And if he DIDN'T, you prolly wouldn't have wanted the job anyhoo ;)
-
I'd say pretty good.

There were two: a driving pin, and something to do with magic. They're both fixed now.
-
What were the issues? Titles? Specifics, man!
-
I forget the titles. They were both Williams games, that I can tell you.
There were a lot of switch faults. Learned about the switch matrix. Also learned how to wax a playfield, and cleaning rubber parts, and what solutions to use. Rubber cleaner also makes an awesome parts loosener.
On to the back room, filled with cabs: there are a ton of them. Either waiting to be converted again, or to be destroyed. I'm going to try and work my way to a confidence level, so I can branch out onto some of my own projects in my spare time. Aparently they're cool with that, but warned that I probably wouldn't have much of my own time! ;)
Off to work, more details tonight when I get home.
-
Yeah, the swtich matrix is hard but once you get it you get it. Have fun with all the transistors in there.
I'm guessing one was Theatre of Magic, good pin. Could the other have been Indianapolis 500 or Corvette? The other really good Williams driving pin that comes to mind is High Speed, but that one is like 8 years older.
-
Read this a day to late, but I'll give my advice anyway..........
It's not what you wear it's what you bring....
Take a 6 pack with you and when you sit down crack one open and offer him one........ ;D

Thanks! But I got the job.

I think it was Theatre of Magic. The other was...was...dogonne it...Getaway. Had to look it up. He just bought a Sopranos pin today, needs a lot of work.
Today was fun, I got to shop out a bunch of games. He bought a (used) Ms Pac/Galaga reunion machine, got to play it for a few minutes. Then we shopped it out, tore off the overlay (well, half of it anyway) and put lexan over the top to protect the rest of the overlay that was left. It had been at a truck stop for several years, and when we washed down the sides...ugh. We sprayed it liberally with Windex, and when it was running down the sides it turned from blue to the color of cola.
-
Heh Peale what would you do if he had you convert something such as an original robotron or pac-man to another title? :P not that it would probably happen but it would be a tough scenario ;)
-
I seriously doubt it would happen. I'd do my best to talk him out of it. But he's got enough converted cabs there would be no shortage.
-
Congrats, Peale. That sounds like a fun gig!

No one is doing that anymore, it doesn't make financial sense to do so anymore. Ops have more cabinet than they no what to do with, much smarter financially to sell the unwanted classic and convert one of the 15 Rough Ranger cabs sitting in the back room.
-
Sounds like a fun job. When you can pay your way trough life doing something that is a passion, that's what I define as successful.
Congrats.
-
I think it was Theatre of Magic.
-
Hey Peale, congrats on the job. You know you are the envy of all us guys here. Like a kid in a candy shop...Don't forget to share those tips you learn.....

Sopranos is a hot pin right now. Not sure why, I guess the show tie in makes a lot of people want it. That pin should bring in some revenue.
Huh...the concensus on that one is that it's boring. It's cool at first, but it's not terribly involved. It does well at first because it's a change, but after the 'newness' wears off, it doesn't make much money.
Today was cool. Emptied that arcade I mentioned. I guess they didn't have a flood, the owner just wanted a new floor and a drop ceiling. Shopped out a couple pins, then went to a family fun center and filled the ticket machines with tickets. After that the owner of the place let us take a ride on his go-carts.
-
Hey Peale, I'm gonna be in Stowe next month, how far from Stowe is this place(s) you are working. Maybe take a drive with the kids. They've never seen a full-blown arcade before...
-
I don't work @ an arcade, I work for an op. If you were to come to where I work, you'd be disappointed, as all the machines are in various states of disrepair in a oil-floor warehouse.
Stowe is quite a haul from here. My ZIP is 05301 if you want to run the miles.

Could be for ops... the only buzz I get is from collectors, and they love it. Then again, they all seem to love the show, which I have never bothered watching.
-
Congrats Peale, I've been meaning to tell you get off your ass and do something meaningful!
-
LOL @ Zakk, I wonder if I'll feel that way sometime.
It's an oiled wooden floor. It used to be a manufacturing plant of some type, and the building was made quite a while ago.
-
Yesterday I got to work on the Getaway pin and replaced a socket. So what, you say? It involved removing the old broken socket which had five inch leads, unsoldering the wires from those leads, loosening the staples that held the leads to the playfield, leading the new socket's leads thru the playfield, threading the leads thru the loosened staples, and finally soldering the wires back onto the leads. It didn't take long, but it was interesting.
So far my job has entailed a lot of cleaning of the games that have been pulled off location, testing them for proper voltage, and general detail work.
Remember the arcade I mentioned above? I cleaned all their games yesterday, since we'd pulled them off location, and we brought them all back today. Man, what a pain. Then we cashed out a bar (I can't believe how much those touch jukeboxes take in!), followed by swapping out a pin @ a pizza parlor.
Then a two hour drive north, where we pulled a couple pool tables off location, then drove all the way back to the shop, with a brief stop at a location that was having issues with their pool table. Turned out to be a combination of chalk in the ball troughs and there were three cue balls, for whatever reason.
-
People in bars think that's funny, to take, for instance, the 8 balls from 5 tables and put them all into one table's dispenser.

If that's not funny then why am I laughing? ;D
