Title: Oscar Controls Restructuring?
Post by: ScoopKW on June 07, 2005, 01:46:23 pm
Went to buy the Vortec spinner from Oscar today and saw this on the ordering page:

NOTICE - Oscar Controls will be closed
between May 25 - June 8 while we restructure.
We will not be accepting orders during this time.

Emails received while we are closed
will be replied to when we reopen.

We apologize for the inconvenience and
hope to serve you when we reopen.

Thank you!!

Usually when businesses close for "restructuring," they don't reopen. Anyone know what's going on with Oscar?

And you are basing this statement on what exactly?  I know plenty of places that have restructured and opened back up as promised.  Maybe Oscar wanted a vacation...

Oscar has closed and reopened before.  Check back on the 9th.

I wonder how OSCAR is going to restructure when he's a one man shop??

While I have y'alls attention, any opinion on the Slickstik Spinner vs. the V2?

Didn't mean to alarm anyone about Oscar Controls -- just that where I'm from, when someone "restructures" it's usually the same as "gone for good."

The tonado will spin forever if you spin it hard.  I don't remember a spinner like that in an arcade and I don't think it sounds fun to play arkanoid that way.  I can tell you that the vortex is a fantastic spinner but I have not yet tried the vortex 2.  When you look at the price difference and the inauthentic feel of the tornado it should be an easy decision.

He's restructuring his ordering portal and his website, not restructuring his business  ::)

GGKoul, Kelsey is probably constructing some extra appendages for himself so he can pull off moves in fighters much more efficiently  ;D

Yeah, it's taking me a lot longer to put it back together than I thought.  Not to mention I'm busier than ever with my real job and I've been in and out of town a couple days every week, so it's been hard to keep the second business/hobby going the last few weeks.

What I'm planning to do in the meantime is to put orders together in quantities that are respective of the time I have available to sell them, and put them on eBay.  Sound confusing??  In other words, say I know that I will only be around for a couple days the next 2 weeks, so I put together 5-10 orders and list them on eBay for the same fixed price that I sold them for on my website.  This lets me manage my time better than just opening the doors and letting the orders roll in, because I won't become a business that lets people place orders, and then they have to wait 2, 3, 4 or more weeks for it to ship.  I will only sell the volume that I have the time to manage, and unfortunately my time is going to very limited this summer.

Hope that clears up any confusion, and if you are waiting for something particular, shoot me an email and I'll do what I can to help you out.

Thanks,

Kelsey

I can't believe my timing.  The day that I was planning on ordering my V2 was the day the restructuring began.  D'oh!

I've sent you a PM.

I did it right this time, fellow BYOAC'ers!  I searched first before asking dumb questions! I'm so proud of myself (shame they don't have a smilie patting itself on the back).

ANYWAY...was glad to see the post from Kelsey...we're just about ready to order a V2 and I also went to the page today to discover the website ordering closed down.  I will search on eBay first, then contact the company for help if I need it.

Bump!

I just got back from vacation, and noticed that Oscar Controls has gone from "restructuring" to "currently closed."

Does this mean I'm SOL finding a V2 Spinner? Anyone heard from Kelsey lately?

Worst-case scenario: What's the best alternative for someone who wants realistic Tempest and Arkanoid gameplay?

Post your need in the Buy Sell Trade forum.  That is what I did and Hoagie_One had an extra one that he sold me about 2 weeks ago.  Post your add and I am sure someone will come through with one.  You may also hit up user Zakk as well.  I think he has some extra spiner stuff.  He is liquidating his inventory of Oscar stuff.

For realistic Arkanoid gameplay you may buy a used real Arkanoid controller...but it isn't going to be realistic for Tempest.  Buy a Vortex for realistic Tempest and it won't be realistic for Arkanoid...

Thus, buy both...

However, when playing arkanoid, your hand is on the spinner all the time -- thus the flywheel shouldn't present such a problem.

If I'm missing something here, please enlighten me. I'm already making a Frankenpanel -- two spinners seems a bit over the top.

PS -- My Control Panel needs .... MORE COWBELL.

Its the gears in the arkanoid spinner make small motions for very large motions.  IE, you might only need 1/2 a turn to get a full motion left / right.. plus have very accurate inbetween.  If you did this with a non-geared spinner you would loose a lot of detail since the spokes in the encoder wheel can only detect so much.

next... The vortex spinners are weighted where an arkanoid isn't.  So quick motion left/right is VERY easy to do.  but if you let go of the spinner it will stop right there right then.

IE, arkanoids are ment to be used with a single rotation or less.
and tempests are made to be spun and let go.

My two cents...

When Oscar's site closed, I went with the Tornado spinner from SlikStick (my apologies, spelling may be wrong?)...has worked fine for me so far!

He had 10 vortex spinners on Ebay that ended August 7th (7 sold).

I'm sure he also had a couple words to say in the thread that mentioned this.

If using MAME, isn't there a sensitivity setting or something where you could make a tempest spinner work for arkanoid?
