Title: Should I do it??????
Post by: Prizmdrop on June 05, 2005, 02:23:49 pm
Well, I'm thinking of selling most of my console games, because im too poor to get this cabinet going otherwise.....so what do you think? Give up my 5 years of collecting console games, sell almost all of it, and create an arcade heaven? (AKA, finishing my mame cab, and buying a candy cab w/ a naomi) Honestly, I dont play most of the console games, I just enjoy collecting the good ones. Im guessing if I got rid of my PS2 and gamecube and can get around $700-$800+. (With the games of course) So, what to do???? Thanks???

Sell 'em.  Console games suck, arcade games rule!!!!!!

:)
Seriously though, I'd give up the console stuff, but I've not been into those "TV Games" since Nintendo.  Get/build a cab, cocktail, bartop and/or cockpit.   Do it!  Do it!

If you've THOUGHT about it, you want some affirmation that you're doing the right thing so you don't feel bad about it.

Consider this #2 for yes.

lol, basicly thats right. I know I will regret it.....but at the same time, I'd love to finish this cab ASAP, then buy a candy cab and a naomi set up. Thanks for your input! 2-sell it all, 0-keep it

Keep what you want, sell the rest.

If you don't want them, may as well sell off, if you wait a year current gen games will be worth a fraction of what they are now.

Sell them!! Remember.. it's "One Mame(TM) to rule them all!"

I have a ps2 and an xbox.. I haven't touched either one in quite awhile...  My Mother is a PS2 rep at Sony, and I get unlimited access to games..and I still don't play it.  Why??? Because a console game is just a console game.....  They are not REAL arcade games!!  As for my xbox.. I am thinkin of turning it into a cheapo HTPC for my bedroom.

Who needs consoles when you get 3500+ R E A L arcade games!!  ;D

Just my 1.125 cents worth

So, if you skip all the blah blah at the top...

ADD ANOTHER YES  ;)

No, don't sell them if you are collecting them.

I regret selling my atari 2600 now.

I like them.  Even if I don't play them, I like to look at them.

If you have any bit of a collector mentality, don't. You will just regret it and spend money to acquire back games you miss. Sometimes it can even wind up costing you more money than you originally spent. Possibly the games wont be in as good of a condition... most people really are hard on console games.

Also If you are having trouble supporting your current console habit and putting together a MAME cab I'd forget about trying to get into the newer arcade hardware. It's just one more thing to stretch the money, unless you know that you will be VERY happy with it.

I vote no. Here's why:

I have a pristine Atari 400 with just about everything. I could sell it and make enough to buy, what, a few joysticks.

I could even add Atari functionality to my soon-to-be-started cabinet. But there's something magical about popping in that Star Raiders cartidge and playing the first-ever fps.

Instead, the 400 is going to sit on it's own little cabinet -- wires and power supplies stealthed -- next to my Mame cab. I'll run a coax to the mame monitor, and be able to play "Shamus" now and again.

I say keep your console games -- perhaps someday you'll wax nostalgic over them.  You'll never be able to replace them all, and chances are that you took far better care of your stuff than others have.

I played a game of Star Raiders the other day -- probably the best use of 16K ever programmed. If I still had my Sega Genesis, I'd put that next to the Atari 400 and play Sonic once a year.

Having posted that, I think I'll get me a "Pong" game. Hopefully the one with the lightgun. That rocked. I look at my game room as a "history of home computing."

I'll bet those console games will look nice in a display case next to your cab. You can always make more money.

Sometimes it can even wind up costing you more money than you originally spent.

I can personally vouch for this.... in '88, I sold my original Atari 2600, which had been a Xmas gift a few years prior... had at least 20 games.  sold the WHOLE thing in a garage sale for $10.... biggest mistake I ever made....

I've replaced it a couple years ago with another Atari 2600, paddles, at least 40 games and altho I don't play it very often, I take comfort in knowing that I DO have it and CAN play it whenever I want....
