I have a mini cab I am going to make my vertical cabinet. Since many classics are vertical, and play best with a true 4-way, I am considering installing two 4-ways. But how many games could there be which are 2-player simultaneous, yet use 4-ways? Probably next to none. However I would get o play Assault properly with 2 4-ways.
Net issue though is I though, well, I will want to play 8-way games too. Now if one joy were 4-way and the other were 8-way, how badly would that affect some dual-joy games like Assault?? Or Karate Champ? Might be weird, huh.
Maybe I should just stick to two 8-ways...

Provided one is a top-fire.

Assault will just annoy you if you use an 8-way.
It flat locks up on any diagonal.
Karate Champ is OK, but you'll find that you will get accidental jumps/ducks if the left stick is an 8-way; and will kick instead of punch on occasion, if the right stick is the 8-way.

Another option would be to use switchable sticks, so that you can play whatever you want.
With all the options available, one of them should fit the bill for you.

Creative control maps in MAME aren't perfect, but they can help this situation.

best of both worlds, put 2 360 joystick and do a mod to attach leaf switches on it for 4-ways....works like a charm in my Q-bert mod.

I forgot to mention that yes, one or both of these sticks will be a top-fire.

Do you know of one that will specifically help Assault?
I've never heard of anyone that has been able to get around the lockup on diagonal with 8-ways--regardless of the current mapping.
