I am looking to make a cabinet... the thing is that the roms for fighting games are going to be what it will mainly be around. The idea of playing 2d fighters on a cab again is wonderful.
I will be using a tv.. i am unsure if it has S-vid or not, the main problem i am thinking of is how i will get my dreamcast and ps2 to output through the PC speakers...
The thing is... if i can find a working converter i beleive the x-box will be better, this being because i will have all SNES, NES, MAME, Neo-Geo games, as well as 2 fighters i will have used the ps2 for... street fighter 3: 3rd strike as well as Guilty Gear XX # Reload
If i use a modded x-box then i d k how i will have it output to a seprate set of speakers... because i dont want the ones on the TV to be used of course.

If your wanting to make it strictly for fighting games I'd go with an X-Box. If you'd want more than just fighters like light gun games, TrackBall and Spinner games, etc; use a PC. Hooking up a set of computer speakers to the X-Box isn't a big deal. You can get an adapter that will convert AV audio cables to a .8mm Stereo set up at Radio Shack for around $5.

ooh sup bro?
i still use those sticks u build me ALOT... thx for them and the parts.

The Xbox is what I use in my cab. It works out most splendidly.
I imagine I will also one day build a PC cab as well, for use with trackball games, as well as for newer MAME stuff that the Xbox can't handle, but for fighters... The Xbox is definitely the way to go.

how much will a modded box cost? and how would i put the emulators on there?
mamex and kawa-x... etc.
Some people have been pming me on my WTB thread saying that they want like 400$ >_< a bit expensive when u really only need a 20 gig hd for the sets of games i want on there. Prob even less space. prob the stock 10 gig would work fine.
-
i belive you can now load linux onto the xbox aswell, not sure whether that stops you playing games normally but if you could it would give allow you to play alot of mame games aswell.
-
there are x-box run emulators from what i know of... i'm unsure if i would need to put linux in there and such...
what do you all reccomend?
i will be a good 3-4 hours till i post again, i am in school at the moment, 2 classes to go... <cry>
btw spiffy, i forgot ur name >_< lolz... u get a new aim SN, cause i kinda deleted ur old one since u were never on.

Well I don't know much about xbox's but I do know that it doesn't take a powerful pc to play most 2d fighters.
I say keep the xbox out for sitting on the couch and playing on the tv (like it was meant for). Put a cheapo pc in the cabinet that you'll never miss. PC's are a dime a dozen, but xbox's are never cheap.
xbox = $200
cheapo pc = $50 (or free if someone you know is upgrading)
Which would you rather have tied up and pigeon-holed?

I am in the same boat shodokan. So I decided to put both in my cabinet. Along with a modded PS2.
I have a few more parts to purchase before its go time, but soon enough the Optimus Prime Experiment will begin to take shape.
I'm a huge fighting fan and couldnt allow myself to miss out on Soul Calibur 3 for PS2, or not use my copy of Street Fighter Collection. Plus the PC version of Guilty Gear. Had to put them all on there.
I look forward to following your project.

The PC does not have any of the new fighters though, such as Soul Calibur II, DOA 3 & Ultimate, Guilty Gear XX 2 #Reload, Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance & Deception...
An Xbox is extremely easy to mod (especially so if you don't plan on getting on Live with it), and it also plays all the old classic fighters as well, so it is definitely the better route for a fighter cabinet.
Check out the following site for information:

They have some pretty good tutorials, as well as having pretty healthy msg boards. If you have a question about modding an Xbox, then the answer can be found there somewhere.

AmericanDemon has a good point. If your just useing it for playing the older 2d fighting games you don't need a super expensive pc. You can find used motherboards and graphics cards etc; on ebay to put yourself together a good enough PC for cheaper than an x-box. And if you've got a PS2 you pretty much can get all the newer fighting games for it that they have on X-Box except for Dead or Alive 3 and Ultimate.
Also you shouldn't have a problem hookin up all 3 systems audio to your computer speakers. Just get some Y-Cables at Radio Shack or you could get a cheap system selector from gamestop and then have the audio signals go from it to your speakers.

I still use the same AIM Handle I'm just never on unless some one emails me and specifically wants to talk on there. I much preffer to talk on BB's and through E-mail.

thx for all the help... although i still dunno what i wanna do... i know i can get a cheap comp... litterly free... but i d k if i wanna do that or not.

Xbox, most pawn shops have them for 99 bucks now.
Ask around for someone to do you a bios flash for a mod.
For me it takes around 15 mins to mod a xbox, or a hour to mod a box and put a big hd in and reload everything.
Later,
dabone

You don't even have to put anything together. Go on ebay search for pentium 3 desktops and sort by "nearest first". Buy one close (it will be CHEEEAAAAP) and then go pick it up.

what exactally do you mean by sort by cloest? kind of like search for someone with them closest to my area?
